Sound Metaphors Mix Series 04 : Piers Harrison

"Following up on our first shared endeavor, “Magic Jive” (2020), we are thrilled to continue this journey and introduce you to our first cassette mix, “Matamoros”.

We strived to seamlessly transition from where our previous mix left off, with the former ending “Late Summer Night” echoing at the very beginning of the recording. You will find here a collection of songs that have serenaded our lives over the past three years, mostly re-edited to make them coexist flawlessly.

On Side A “Onda”, you will listen to a light contemplative sailing soundtrack whilst Side B “Costa” depicts what would be our dream setting for a night at a resort park discotheque."

Jordi, aka Llupe, and Nico, aka DJ Aficionado, share quite a few things in common: Catalan origins, a love for all things Balearic, the same street in Berlin and shows on Refuge Worldwide. They both certainly appreciate a good party, too.

Organizing parties and playing together was a natural direction for them. Their party series, Orbita, launched earlier this year, aims to create ample space for quality adult dance music. It seems to be working well, as they’ve been fortunate to host guests like Apiento, Tom of England, and Sianza, to name a few.

This mix is a recording from the last Orbita party, held at Fitzroy on what many described as the last day of summer in Berlin. For those who remember, it was a dreamy and sensual Sunday, filled with music that sounded just right in that room. It felt nice and cosy and the dancers seemed to be momentarily free from any kind of Monday angst. Playful and light, yet seriously good. Feel the magic, times two.

Sound Metaphors Mix Series 29 : DJ Aficionado & Llupe

These two were so great. ddwy are making brilliant music right now and they showed their influences when they came down to play an hour of music for us. Very much a blissed out sound running from Underworld to slowed down Hypnotone and on... It was such a nice session and they nailed it.

“I recently found this mix of weird R&B dubs while pillaging old laptops for music and I haven’t turned it off since. If you've ever dug through old drives for anything you know how mundane and unrewarding it can be. It's like a road trip that never ends. However, when you come across a file labeled  "Actavis and Activator" you pull the car over and see what's going on. I couldn’t tell you when or why I made it but I’m glad I did. Feel good vibes for feel bad times. Hope you like it.”

London based duo @runninghotmusic have been making noise over the past few years for their deep digging DJ sets at London venues like The Cause & Brilliant Corners, alongside their DJ edits series and popular YouTube channel.

Their sound covers a lot of ground, from the weird and the wonderful to the best in dance floor business; moving through Reggae, Street Soul, Boogie, Disco, House and everything in between.

You can catch them every month via their residency on Balamii radio.

On the mix...

We're both big hip-hop fans and have been for years but it's not something we typically play that much in our sets. We'd also had this idea of making a mix in the style of the radio stations you in the Grand Theft Auto games kicking around for a while and with the series being called Stan Radio this seemed like a good opportunity to combine the two things and do it. It's something a bit different from the usual mix format and hopefully people will dig it. Buckle up and enjoy the ride!
