La réécriture des mythes européens dans Le Seigneur des anneaux, avec Eugène Frimas, Walter Aubrig et Armand Berger.
Tolkien trouvait que l’Angleterre manquait de légendes comparables à celles des Scandinaves, Grecs, Latins, ou encore Celtes. Il a plusieurs fois signalé son envie de donner à son pays une mythologie qui lui serait propre. Pour cela, il a repris des mythes européens et a créé son univers, avec ses dieux, ses peuples, ses langues, ses paysages différents… Et pourtant si proches des nôtres. Comme Homère, et comme Virgile ou Shakespeare, auxquels il s’était comparé, Tolkien a repris une matière ancienne pour la remodeler en une épopée intégrée à ce qu’il appelait « une longue ligne continue, indivisible », une tradition héroïque et littéraire.
