This Wednesday, resident Luke returns with a brand-new episode of our mini-series Rhythm & Roots, where we dive deep into the defining genres and foundational movements in music. This week, we explore the fascinating world of library music and soundtracks.

Library music — sometimes called production or stock music — is one of the music industry’s hidden engines. Its roots stretch back to the early 20th century, when companies such as De Wolfe Music began supplying music for film accompaniment and newsreels, later building recorded catalogues as sound cinema emerged. By the 1950s and 60s, the growth of television created huge demand for ready-made musical cues, and dedicated libraries flourished. Pioneering labels such as KPM Music and Bruton Music helped shape the modern production-music model, offering pre-recorded tracks for licensing across film, television, radio and advertising — saving producers time while giving composers new creative outlets.

In this episode, we’ll trace that story while also celebrating some of the composers who defined the broader world of soundtrack music. You’ll hear the work of R. D. Burman, whose bold fusion of Indian classical, jazz and Western pop reshaped the sound of Bollywood, alongside the unmistakable cinematic voice of Ennio Morricone, whose scores transformed the emotional language of film music. We’ll also spotlight Roy Budd, remembered for his gritty, jazz-inflected score to Get Carter, and others who moved fluidly between film scoring, television work and the wider world of production music.
