A dubstep legend roars back.

When dubstep ruled the roost in the late '00s, electronic music had no shortage of icons and spinoff variants to rally around. But one rumble from  Bristol stood out: the Purple sound. Popularised by Joker, AKA Liam Mclean, with Guido and Gemmy in support, it hit like a beam of bright light flooding through the basement dank.

When America cottoned onto bass quakes in the next decade, Mclean's taste for chiptune-coded synths and maximum intensity kept his vision alive at arena level, even while he retreated from view as an actively touring performer.

In 2023, "Tears," a collaboration with Skrillex and Sleepnet, helped remind the world just how much Joker's juddering sound could put us in a headlock. True to form, this year's gargantuan "Juggernaut"—Mclean's first solo single in six years—crashes through the speakers with as much glorious crunch as earlier classics like 2009's "Purple City."

Mclean has kept busy in the studio applying his perfectionist streak as a producer and engineer to many sound system anthems, which means his influence is never far from a dance floor being turned inside out. The fact that Joker had never laid down an RA Podcast before was, being honest, a blemish in our copybook. RA.962 fixes that in style.

Solid Steel (19th April) This week we begin with DJ Irk's brand new 'Let Battle Commence' mix, which starts out with a scratch sequence featuring the 'Solid Steel' sample from classic 80s film The Running Man. We then move on to some hard-hitting electronic hip hop from Two Fingers, Doshy and DZA, followed by some smoother bass grooves from Livingstone, Yan Zombie and Reso, before closing out with some double-time beats from Jubei and Fourward.
The Disablists take over the decks with a mix that has the 4 x UK DMC champions cutting up Kidkanevil, Gangstarr and MOP over Roots Manuva's 'Witness the Fitness' before switching to the excellent Slugabed remix. Dead Prez drops in over Hudson Mohawke, plus music from Machinedrum, Jay Majik and the Philip D Kick re-edit of Adam F, before taking it back with an old school selection via Dizzee Rascal, which sets up nicely for Hour 2.

Chris Reed, also known as Plastician (formerly Plasticman), is a Producer / DJ from Thornton Heath in the London Borough of Croydon.

Plastician is unique in that he is respected as one of the true pioneers of both the Dubstep, Grime and most recently Wave genres. 

Always reputed for selecting from a broad range of bass heavy styles and seeking out the genres that emerge from between established scenes.

He plays a monthly radio show on Rinse FM, where he has been credited for breaking many artists and collectives on his show, some artists who had their first plays on his shows include Joker, Om Unit, Klasey Jones, Mura Masa and countless more.

In 2006 he spent 18 months on BBC Radio 1, making him the world's first DJ to have a specialist dubstep and grime radio show on national radio.
