In each episode, a caller sends us their dilemma, and we invite a poet to listen to whatever it is that’s troubling them, and to read a poem that offers consolation, guidance, or just a good laugh. Plas­tik durch­dringt nahezu jede Sphäre unse­rer Umwelt – ange­fan­gen bei der Luft, dem Wasser und Boden bis hin zum mensch­li­chen Körper. Selbst den Mars hat Plastik bereits erreicht. Doch welche Neben­wir­kun­gen sind eigent­lich erwie­sen und macht die Dosis wirk­lich das Gift?

In der zwei­ten SCHIRN Podcast­folge von LIVING IN A PLAS­TIC WORLD gibt Plas­tik­ex­per­tin Anja Krie­ger einen Über­blick auf den aktu­el­len Forschungs­stand zu den Neben­wir­kun­gen von Kunst­stof­fen für Mensch und Umwelt. Im Gespräch mit dem Ökoto­xi­ko­lo­gen Martin Wagner erfah­ren wir, was passie­ren kann, wenn Chemi­ka­lien aus Plas­tik austre­ten und in den Körper gelan­gen. Im Anschluss spricht Anja Krie­ger mit dem Ökolo­gen Matthias Rillig, der an der Freien Univer­si­tät Berlin erforscht, wie sich Mikro­plas­tik auf die Böden auswirkt.

Manche sagen, wir werden in Zukunft immer Plas­tik brau­chen, und sogar mehr davon. Nur eine bessere Abfall­wirt­schaft und neue Recy­cling-Tech­no­lo­gien könn­ten helfen. Auf der ande­ren Seite gibt es die vielen Initia­ti­ven, die den ganzen Müll, der in der Umwelt landet, mühsam wieder einsam­meln. In den letz­ten Jahren haben viele Länder und auch die Euro­päi­sche Union begon­nen, das Problem anzu­ge­hen. Doch Plas­tik ist ein Mate­rial, das sich nicht um Länder­gren­zen schert. Wie schät­zen Wissen­schaft­ler*innen und Poli­tik­wis­sen­schaft­ler*innen die Lage ein?

Für die dritte und letzte Folge von LIVING IN A PLAS­TIC WORLD blicken wir auf Lösungs­an­sätze und lernen, welche Rolle dabei die Wissen­schaft, Zivil­ge­sell­schaft, Akti­vis­mus, Indus­trie und natio­nale Regie­run­gen spie­len. Im Gespräch mit der Tief­see­öko­lo­gin Mela­nie Berg­mann erfährt Anja Krie­ger, wie poli­ti­scher Akti­vis­mus von Seiten der Forschung ausse­hen kann und weshalb die Kunst eine immer wich­ti­gere Alli­ierte der Wissen­schaft wird. Im Anschluss trifft sie auf den Poli­tik­wis­sen­schaft­ler Per-OIof Busch und spricht über das globale Abkom­men, das die Verein­ten Natio­nen gerade verhan­deln, um das Plas­tik­pro­blem zu stop­pen.

LIVING IN A PLASTIC WORLD. VON MÜLLBERGEN UND ZUKUNFTVISIONEN

The global plastics treaty is currently being drafted by the global community - an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. One of the experts attending the meetings is Christina Dixon from the Environmental Investigation Agency. The EIA is an NGO which has campaigned against environmental crime and abuse since the 1980s, from whaling to ivory trade, to ozone depletion and climate change. Chris Dixon is their expert on plastic pollution at the London office, and she sent me food for thought with a voice message. How do we get to a successful plastics treaty? Chris says there are some fundamental principles that can guide us there.
