This week's Rio De Janeiro World Tour spotlight goes to the Tijolo Records' affiliate Jacquelone who delivers a mix that's heavy on the low end and channels the vibrant spirit of her city.

Once a year, Rio becomes the epicentre of rhythm, resistance and celebration — and in 2025, we made our Carnaval debut right in the heart of it.

This one-off Boiler Room street party brought together the full spectrum of Rio’s sound system culture: from afrofunk and funk carioca, to Miami bass, pagode, and beyond. A true bloco-style throwdown with some batidão pesado e zero KO! 

Curated by Taísa Machado, the line-up featured some of the most iconic names in Brazil: Rennan Da Penha, Furacão 2000, Marcelin, Crazy Jeff, Heavy Baile DJ Set, DJ Vicx, MC Marcelly, Preta Queen B Rull.

Having long been considered the beating heart of cultural innovation in Brazil, Bahia’s unique cultural blend has resulted in a hotbed of localised sounds - from axé, afoxé and ijexá, through to more modern incarnations such a pagode, arrocha, and samba reggae.

Rising from this melting pot, however, is Pagodão: an uptempo, soundsystem-ready take on the more romantic pagode rhythms, which integrates trap, baile funk, house, reggateon and hip hop to create music destined for the dancefloor.

As part of Boiler Room x Ballantine's: Salvador, we’re celebrating this unique sound in its entirety. From stadium-filling pagode acts, to the most vibrant underground innovators, we’ll be welcoming Baiana System, O Kanalha and many more.

The Brazilian city of Salvador’s deep connection with the African continent has long been a central influence in much of the city’s output, with legendary Afrocentric carnival ‘blocos’ such as Ilê Ayiê further strengthening the connection with the African identity over several decades.

A leader in this movement today – Batekoo: a LGBTQIA+ focused collective whose central theme is celebrating Salvador and Baiano culture. For Boiler Room x Ballantine's Salvador, we’ll be bringing them back to home turf for a celebration of the city at its most cutting-edge and innovative.
