KETTAMA - Boiler Room x AVA Festival 2023

Luke Slater’s Mote-Evolver reach the big 4-0 with the help of Chris Jarman, the commanding officer behind the Kamikaze Space Programme. Looking to redefine the concept of uncompromising from bass culture’s traditional Bristol HQ, ‘Concrete Musique’ is four tracks of loud, hard-nosed, techno-taunting speaker pressure.

Both ‘The Bailiff’ and ‘Network Rail’ power off boxy kick drums: such is their statement of intimidation, not much else is needed to accompany this campaign of haymaking through the arena.With percussion veering between tub-thumping and machine gunned tribalism, the pair set about a session of straight up and down ear-bashing. ‘The Bailiff’ carries the thinnest and daintiest of supernatural airs, while ‘Network Rail’ and its spearing loops demand to be housed in a hangar reaching breaking point.

Dancing on the live rail and taking a buzzsaw to its bottom end is the blackened electro breakbeat of ‘Radio’, laying down body-popping lino before the techno undertone turns it into a bed of nails. KSP’s palette is again sparse, watching the sparks fly while cowbells ring in the distance, making a date with the Deathstar for all poppers and lockers brave enough to face its wrath.

‘Death to the Valley’ is a versatile beast. Thanks to its explosive bass foundation, it can be found sweeping grime and trap before it, hanging out in the deepest techno recesses, and stomping its breakbeat feet. Another seethingly bare backdrop, punctuated by lab squiggles and signals vainly trying to keep a leash on the marauder it has let loose, means you should wear protection: contents are white hot.

After releases on Livity Sound sister label DnuoS YtiviL and Cold Recordings, Batu returns with his own new imprint Timedance. The label is set to offer a platform for hybrids and mutations of UK Techno, and the first release will be launched with a party in Bristol on 20th February, where Batu is joined at the Cavern Club by Beneath and Transient. The release showcases a progression from Batu's first two 12'', with more colour and melody than his previous work, sitting alongside waves of propulsive percussion.

Three artists riding high off career-peak years combining for some darkly alluring techno? Yes please. Well, Clockwork and Avatism’s pairing isn’t strictly new, but they’ve been picking up a considerable head of steam under the CW/A moniker in recent months – including a booking at perhaps the last Fabric NYE of the pre-sniffer, pre-breathalyser era – and this release is their largest statement to date.  

We could have plumped for a typically unblinking edit from Lucy, but pulled Ilian Tape don Dario Zenker’s remix out the bag instead. He flattens the landscape of the title track, shelling claps down like pintacks to keep the pace choppy and brisk. It’s a good’un, and it sees release on Parachute Records next month.

CW/A "Day of Riddance (Dario Zenker Remix)" - Boiler Room Debuts

Born in the east of France, but resident further south in Lyon since 2003, Pierre Serafini has been immersed in underground music his whole adult life. First as guitarist in teenage shoegaze and postpunk bands, then as samplist experimenter Opti, as head of the Airflex Labs label from 2008-12, and most recently with his more technoid alter-ego PEEV - he has always been about exquisite detail and musicality which has seen him forge alliances with many in the international post-dubstep generation as they passed through Lyon and played shows he promoted.
This track, which perfectly bridges his more banging four-to-the-floor exploits and his subtler structures, comes out on the 22nd Feb on the UML VA#03 compilation from top Belgian label and party promoters Under My Label.
