SPFDJ’s fleet movement behind the decks could have you wondering whether she’s the DJ or a dancer in the crowd. @anethamusic's first decade in dance music has been impressive indeed. Much of it is now on her own terms, too - she runs the Mama Told Ya label and agency where she drops her own glorious mix of techno, EBM and trance as well as platforming emerging artists. She is a resident DJ at Amsterdam's epic Awakenings as well as Le Sucre in her native France and Fuse in Brussels. Her "less is more" but always colourful and emotional take on techno is inspired by the fact she is a qualified architect and it is embodied in the title of her recent "Rules Are Meant to Be Broken EP" in collaboration with Ryan James Ford. 

Anetha's DJ dexterity is on full show in this week's 90-minute mix as she works through many different shades of high-tempo club music. There are passages of youthful and raved-up sounds, stripped-back warehouse rhythms and firing machine music. There are hints of everything from trance to gabber to EBM helping to add character to each track and it's that which makes this such a compelling listen from a new school star.

Philippa Pacho is back on Bassiani airwaves for Podcast 178. The dynamic artist behind positivesource and STHLM Murder Girls knows a thing or two about setting a crowd in motion. Her shapeshifting beats and unmatched energy fast making her a household name far outside her native Sweden and more recent Berlin base. Her residency at Stockholm mainstay Under Bron is about a decade old, but there’s not even so much as a suggestion of hesitancy or weariness in her work, carrying a passion that’s infectious, and as palpable in a club as it is on screen (check out her recent sets on Hör). Her Techno really is powerful stuff, a sustained sonic onslaught, an unyielding beast, hulking and formidable but also smart. For many DJs whose sound is so heavily reliant on bass to carry forth their message, a slip into monotony wouldn’t be entirely unpredictable, but Philippa’s cunning use of supporting effects and melody keeps even a 6 hour journey like this one interesting from start to finish. This up and coming doyenne of loop Techno really is a force like no other.

BIO:
There are few musicians who manage to explore the convergence between techno and experimental as successfully as David Letellier.
Known as Kangding Ray, he has been producing for almost a decade, releasing his music exclusively on Raster-Noton and Stroboscopic Artefacts.
The aesthetic domains of these two labels epitomizes Kangding Ray’s complex sound—it’s an aesthetic that tests boundaries, evolving tirelessly in its exploration of texture, rhythm, and sound design.
Letellier’s foundations in rock and musique concrete give his music a vitality and uniqueness that has won fans the world over, from discerning avant-garde–electronica listeners, all the way to devoted clubbers.
KR has also been known for remixing artists such as Battles on Warp, Ben Frost on Mute, or Inigo Kennedy on Token.
Those who have been following Letellier since his debut album, 2006’s Stabil, will recognize not only his meticulous and constantly developing approach to sound design, but also the conceptual gravity behind his releases.
Through a string of recent EP’s and albums, culminating with the critically acclaimed “Solens Arc”, KR showed his ability to keep his artistic approach while delivering direct and powerful club-leaning tracks and darkly cinematic soundscapes. On 2015’s “Cory Arcane”, he pushed the limits of his sound even further, relinquishing standard rhythmic structures and conventional tonal models, he delivered what is perhaps his most sophisticated release yet; a raw and visceral universe, allowing a more fluid dialogue between soul and machines.
The forthcoming “HYPER OPAL MANTIS” for Stroboscopic Artefacts opens a new era for Kangding Ray, where he will explore the tension between the natural and artificial, the body and mind, which are central themes in electronic music in general, and Techno in particular. The means of creation, focused around technology and interactions with machines, contrast with the emotional response to sound, the mystical ritual of collective dancing, and the ethos of liberation and tolerance embedded in the culture it has produced.
As he describes it himself in a recent interview : “I’ve been evolving since a couple of years at the outer fringes of the club culture, where it overlaps with different experimental and avant-garde genres. While i entend to continue to explore that zone as a free maverick, i also wanted to give something back to the scene, something strong, beautiful and functional at the same time, while retaining enough personality to be exciting.”

The 40th mix in our series comes from Manchester-based duo Blasha & Allatt. As two of four founding members of Meat Free, Steffi and Tash have made a vital contribution to their adopted city’s dance music culture over the last five years and are now also starting to make a real name for themselves as DJs both around the UK and in Europe.
