DJ Koco | Boiler Room x Technics x Dommune: 50 years of the SL-1200

I discovered DJ Koco a few months ago, watched many hours of his DJ sets, and was so inspired that I created a DJ set in tribute and gratitude to him.

DJ Koco aka Shimokita is Japanese, blind in one eye, and plays exclusively on 7" which are small vinyl records, hard-to-get and challenging to work with.

His craft and technics are masterful and he can perform all the "turntablist" tricks in the book. You know, scratching and cutting from deck to deck and much more.

I appreciate that, but what i'm really inspired by, is his art, style, and musicality.

In one DJ set he weaves old school hip hop, Brazilian, Latin, Disco, Rap, House, Funk, Jazz,  Pop, and many other genres and styles.  It all flows seamlessly and naturally. 
He plays both well-known anthems and songs very few people know. Trying to Shazam his songs is an exercise in futility. 
Koco keeps an upbeat, energetic and happy vibe throughout his journeys. I love to see how much he enjoys his music. 

I was already an open-format DJ and included many different genres, but watching DJ koco and listening to his sets gave me even more inspiration and the reminder I can play anything i wish, as long as it fits the vibe.

I loved hip hop since the late 80s when I heard Eric B and Rakim's sampling of Israeli/Yemenite singer Ofra Haza, as well as "Rapper's Delight" and other songs.
I remember that more than anything, I loved the syncopated (not symmetric) rhythms, the beats and the samples.

Many people think "Hip Hop" is the same as gangsta rap, and always includes "rapping", vulgarities and such.
I never resonated or related to those themes because my life circumstances are different.

The kind of Hip Hop I love and play here is mostly instrumental and features jazz, soul, funk and lots of Brazilian and Latin samples.     
Nearly any Hip Hop song you can name probably includes a sample from an old record. Visit whosampled.com and find the origins of your favorite songs.

In the past I usually did long transitions between songs, but now I experiment with very short and quick transitions, sometimes as short as 8 beats.

I'm also inspired by Koco and DJ Nick Spinelli to play just the best parts of the songs - What Nick calls "Quick Mixing". 
On average, every song here is only 2 minutes long.

I included a few of the songs DJ Koco plays, as well as my own favorites:
A song from the first James Bond movie, Israeli Bossanova, 3 versions of "Rapper's Delight", Balkan Hip hop, a remix and a cover of a 80s and 90s anthems, a piece by my good friend Adrian Atma, who is a multi-instrumentalist and beatboxer, and an amazing melodic samba song which is a journey by itself.

I have hundreds of songs for the next journeys and I've already been dropping some of them in my Ecstatic Dance, Tropical Chillout and Party sets.

177 - The BBE Sessions - DJ Mitsu the Beats (2006)

In the late seventies, Turin's pulse quickened through the efforts of Ivo Lunardi, a DJ and club owner who understood that a dance floor could hold more than local hits. His Voom Voom Music imprint drew from Disco polish, Pop structures, Rock energy, and the deep Funk lines arriving from Black America, assembling a catalogue that looked well beyond Italy's borders. The label gave space to Afro-Rock outfits like M'Bamina and the shape-shifting productions of Luigi Venegoni, whose Stratosferic Band moved between Progressive Rock and the emerging language of Italo with ease. These records carried the weight of intent, not just inventory. Since 2016, Gianluca Pandullo aka I-Robots has overseen the master tapes through Opilec Music and Turin Dancefloor Express, preserving a legacy that reaches from Piedmont to Kinshasa to New York. The music endures because it was never provincial – it always understood itself as part of a larger conversation.

Now, from those vaults emerges “I-Robots presents Echoes Of Italy: The Age Of Voom Voom Music – Turin Dancefloor Express,” a twelve-track collection curated by Gianluca and released digitally through the closely linked Space Echo and Dialogo Records. The selection spans the label's most fertile period, gathering productions that defined an era when Italian dance music first looked outward.

The Boston Garden's "Lady Pick-Up" surfaces here as an unreleased edit from 1975, pulled from the vaults and set loose by Maestro Pandullo. The track places KC & The Sunshine Band's strut in a room with Manu Dibango's indelible groove – two conversations happening at once, each informing the other. The rhythm section locks in with the kind of frictionless confidence that defined the era's best session work, while horns punch through at exactly the right moments. What distinguishes this edit is its restraint: nothing overstays, nothing clamours for attention. It simply moves, the way a floor moves when the temperature is right. A lost take from a fertile moment, now found and set loose again.
