Rook Records // Mr Thing [Vinyl 45s Mix]

Nyboe is a Danish hip hop vinyl DJ for almost 20 years - specialising in west coast and south hiphop, boom bap, instrumental sets, Danish rap and crosses into especially library music, jazz, trip hop, breaks and soul.  He is the winner of Wax Poetics x Polaroid's and Reloop's international mixtape contests and has played at everything from hiphop-jams and nightclubs to cafés, bars and his favorite thing, as a warm up act for international and Danish hiphop acts – for example recently and soon artists like CRIMEAPPLE, Boldy James & The Alchemist, Oddisee, XP The Marxman, Guilty Simpson and many more.
 
Nyboe is known for his extensive vinyl collection and cratediggin passion, which he shares on his Instagram page @nyboesvinyler.
 
He also ran the Danish hiphop label Idiotsikker Records for 10 years and was responsible for everything vinyl at the legendary hiphop label and store Run For Cover for many years.  Nyboe also has his own podcast - Nyboe's Pod - and is part of VINYL ECHOES on Black Rhino Radio with djf1bi.

In this mix Nyboe presents 47 of his favorite 90’s West Coast and Southern hiphop track from his personal vinyl-collection plus one Danish from 2001 all blending seamlessly together for this two hour long journey into a timepocket of a unique scene and culture within hiphop.

“Even though a lot of people consider me a boom bap head and a backpacker, my favorite hiphop has always emerged from the South and West Coast of the States – especially from ’94-’97. 

And spending a lot my time in the western part of Aarhus - Aarhus V - when I was a teenager also exposed me to what most people were listening to there if they listening to hiphop - the gangsta rap and G-Funk.
 
Most of my favorite rappers are from there and although there are some ignorant lyrics – which you can easily find among New York rappers as well – this is where storytelling was always an important part of the lyrics.
 
It’s not just the storytelling that artists like Eightball & MJG, UGK, Scarface, Dru Down and many more perfected, it’s also about the musicality and the sound. Back then the G-Funk had way more bounce and the flows were to me way more exciting. So the mix has mostly focus on the sound and finding songs that not only fit well together, but also represents and portraits the scene and sound that I wanna present. So it’s also a lot of deeper cuts and I have a feeling that only a select few in Denmark will know all of the tracks in this mix.
 
The mix is also a tribute to the skate videos coming out of my hometown Aarhus, both in the earlier days but certainly also in newer times, from the likes of VX8000 and Doggs4Life, where you can as easily hear a track from Dru Down, Ice Cube or Tru as you can a Pete Rock, Sean Price or Biggie cut.

DJ Prime Cuts, aka Joel Clements, founded Scratch Perverts with Tony Vegas and DJ Renegade in London in 1996, winning two World DMC Team titles together. Since then he's gone on to perform around the world and is widely considered one of the UK's finest!

He visited Rook Records last week and brought with him a killer selection of funk & soul breaks, all blended with expert precision. For the battle minded DJ, this is surely one to watch!

The album plays like a night at a South Bronx community center in 1973, but the “geeks” are crate-diggers, coders, gamers, and studio heads who obsess over breaks, signal chains, and culture history. Each track feels like a different moment of the party: the first needle drop, the breakers’ circle, the mic getting passed, and the late-night cool‑down when only the true heads remain. Sonically it’s raw, mono-to-stereo vintage hip-hop made from funk and soul breaks, with room noise, kids talking, train rumble, and DJ chatter baked into the mix.
