"Being a part of this scene is already a political act." The longtime DJ discusses politics in dance music and Ex-Yugoslavia's dynamic anti-establishment creative culture.

Tijana Todorovic (AKA Tijana T) proudly hails from the Ex-Yugoslavian capital Belgrade. The Serbian city, alongside the territories now known as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Slovenia, were once under singular socialist rule that Tijana describes as a "utopian time" that fostered intense creativity and counter-cultural art and music. A liberal communist republic that didn't operate under the influence of the USSR, as many Eastern European countries did at that time, Yugoslavia gave birth to a dynamic, anti-establishment performance culture rooted in new wave, feminism and everything non-mainstream.

In her RA Exchange with senior producer Chloe Lula, Tijana reflects on how growing up in this environment irrevocably shaped her values and taste in music, as well as how the civil war—and Yugoslavia's subsequent fall—defined the period of intense fear and poverty that followed. In Serbia, techno and nightclubs became an energetic force for young people seeking solace, community and sociopolitical change. Tijana went on to work as a TV and radio journalist that fought vehemently against the war, and to break out as an artist beyond the Ex-Yugoslavian territory. She talks about her unlikely trajectory, her view on the intrinsic connection between politics in dance music, underdeveloped music markets, sobriety and more. Listen to the episode in full.

Jerome Sydenham is a highly respected Nigerian-born DJ, electronic music producer, and the founder of the respected label Ibadan Records. Currently based in Berlin, Jerome had a career that made him travel the globe and rock every dancefloor that he was able to touch. A producer who creates meaningful and creative pieces, Jerome has worked with some of the biggest names such as Kerri Chandler, Carl Craig, and others.

This mix was recorded at Planet Rose (Doornroosje) in Nijmegen, Netherlands. Showcasing Jerome's technical abilities, this work will take you on a 3-hour trip. This mix used to be available on websites that are not currently functioning, and only the second part was available online, so we decided to restore it. As always, enjoy the music and support the artist.

Welcome to Shelter's SoundCloud channel. Here we will continuously publish a selection of set recordings from the basement. 

The grand debut comes from one of our favourite house outfits: the distinguished gentlemen of Italojohnson. Their first time in Shelter resulted in total rapture, with the trio playing well into the next morning, with an incredible crowd that showed no signs of wanting to go home.

Artist statement;
"A show at Shelter is always very special to us. We've spent
quite some time on different occasions at this vibey place below the ADAM
tower and it always feels a bit like coming home.

"And that is mostly because of the people. A very welcoming crowd
generating high spirits and that would most probably break a leg (or even
2) on the dance floor. No one seems stuck in just one style of electronic
music - if you strike the right cord, anything will be possible - believe
us ;)

Combine this atmosphere with an excellent and perfectly tuned sound system
and you get what they call "a club experience".

We are really looking forward to our next appearance on February 9th.
