Kings Of Tomorrow's Classic Vinyl Mix

With the scene and stage having been set by Herbie Saccani at Hacienda NYE at The Albert Hall, the one true innovator Marshall Jefferson took to the stage in the run up to midnight at the event, the first up of trio of US DJ legends performing that evening.

Given an hour to play the best of MJ’s modern and classic working it house music, his stylings include syncopated vocals and such tricks as he begins with some deep downbeat dirty grooves, punctuated by strong female vocalsm following an anthemic New York party style  for the night with tight us club material. 

Moving towards electric dubs and oldschool samples with the bumping groove of Mark Knights and  Martin Ten Velden Remix of the space aged “In The Beginning”, a change of pace comes with what many people have said was their highlight of the night Joes Smooth’s “Promised Land” with a long mix out into the charging piano dub of Marshall’s own classic “Move Your Body”, weaved in and out by the very hands that produced it.

Continuing along with the theme with a couple of classics, the extended vocal intro of C And C Music Factory’s anthem “Pride (A Deeper Love)”, Strictly Rhythm’s “Deep Inside” by Harddrive, Marshall then takes things more Balearic with Junior Jack’s re-working of Dajae’s “Everyday My Life” before taking things deep and disco to the end of his set with Adeva Vs Nathan Rivers “In And Out (Of My Life).

With MJ handing over to Frankie Knuckles at midnight, The Jackson Sisters “I Believe In Miracles” gets a room shaking run out before Marshall takes things to the bridge with a Basement Jaxx cut, “Samba Magic” from the Summer Daze EP.

For the 12th show on Cowbell Radio I am honoured to bring you an exclusive mix from Amsterdam based DJ & Producer - Mr Mendel.  We split the mix into 3 parts for the show but here is the full version in all it's glory.

Mr Mendel started out spinning records at the infamous Duivel Cafe Bar, a place well known as a hub of raw hip-hop. This landed him a residency at Freakin Ill, an old school club night at Bitterzoet, Amsterdam.

However Mr Mendel soon discovered that hip hop just wasn't enough. His job at Waxwell Records was introducing him to soul, disco, afro and brazil records, and he instantly fell in love with the smell of dust, thousands of album covers and the crackling sound of old vinyl.

As Mr Mendel honed his DJ’ing skills he developed an all-round style; collecting and spinning dance music from all corners of the globe with only one condition “as long as it’s good soulful music”.

Always selecting passionate and intriguing tunes, expect to hear sexy melodies, funk filled basslines, energetic drums, exotic percussion and euphoric vocals.

Sometimes you’ll catch him play banging disco and house, while at other times he might surprise you with downtempo soul and tropical vibes. Mr Mendel also curates the tropical playlist for 22tracks Amsterdam.

Definitely a kindred spirit, it's this wide and varied taste that led us to ask him to do a mix for the show.

As a DJ, Mr Mendel currently holds down residencies in Amsterdam at parties such as 'I Love Vinyl', 'Wicked Jazz Sounds' and 'Doka'.  He's both influenced by and has played alongside DJ's such as Rich Medina, Rahaan, Sadar Bahar, John Morales, Lefto, Marcel Vogel, Rob Manga and KC The Funkaholic.

As a producer he has edited big tracks by the likes of Nina Simone and James Brown. Plus the Mr Mendel edit of 'Trio Ternura's' A Gira got support from the likes of Giles Peterson.

His recent 'Mr Mendel edits' on Basic Fingers has all but sold out in the shops but is still available on Discogs.

Mr Mendel's new track 'Far Away' is included on the forthcoming Lumberjacks Boogie Vol 1 12" - the EP also features tracks by Rayko, Em Vee aka Marcel Vogel and Man Made Music.

High up in the (new) disco mafia, Mr Mendel knows how to rock a party and there are loads of top selections on this world class mix.

This is a digitised copy of a tape I picked up in 1993, when David Morales played at the Hacienda 11th birthday party. I was actually there that night, Morales played in the basement (not usually open at the Hac) from 4-6am, while Frankie Knuckles played in the main room.

Stripped to the waist, wearing a skull cap & tattooed muscles, Morales played street tough New York City house music, and there's lessons in here for modern DJs. I know this mix off by heart, and re-listening to it 21 years later, I can say it's still fresh. 

This particular night at The Hacienda has gone down in legend - for the wrong reasons. The club was full of local gangsters, taking watches from wrists and starting fights. These were the 'gunchester' days, you had to keep your head down.

Listen to the mix - at the end the record abruptly ends, starts again and then ends. This was when Morales was being mugged by a pack of 'scallies' - I myself witnessed them hit him on the head with a glass, lean over the decks and take his vinyl.

This episode was written up in Peter Hook's excellent book - 'How Not To Run A Club'. Apparently after the incident Morales said "you don't pay me enough to bleed"....

David Morales Live At The Hacienda 11th Birthday Party 1993

With David Morales returning to play for FAC51 The Haçienda for the first time in seven years, headlining The Warehouse Project on Boxing Day, David has kindly supplied an exclusive one hour mix of classic Haçienda tunes, which he considers his salute to the music and spirit of the original Haçienda.

The stylish set puts together many of The Hac's and David's finest records from the late Eighties and early Nineties period, mixing disco, Italian house, and soulful garage styles in a seamlessly mixed testament to the strength and depth of music then.

Kicking off with the elegant strings of a laid back take on FPI Project's "Rich In Paradise", the original extended 12 inch version of Frankie Knuckles and Robert Owen's "Tears" follows before some nimble production tricks bring in the classic stabs and orders to groove of Inner City's "Big Fun". 

A light tempo runs throughout the set, with most tracks played in full with extended mixes as Black Box's "Ride On Time" and its Lolleatta Holloway vocal takes charge in all its glory before David's own seminal classic, the original Def Mix version of Robert Owen's "I'll Be Your Friend" is unleashed with its ever contemporary atmosphere of lustful, deep, tribal US clubs.

X-Press 2's "Muzik Xpress", the original 12 inch version of Alison Limerick's "Where Love Lives" and the stepped back soul of Benny Benassi's version of Black Box's "Everybody Everybody" all appear in the second half hour of the set while the delicate pianos of Soft House Company's "What You Need" brings the mix to the close in what proves a round up of many of the biggest track that shaped dance music some two decades ago during The Hacienda's original heyday.
