With Dysnomia, the Brooklyn-based group Dawn of Midi made up of double bass player Aakaash Israni, pianist Amino Belyamani and drummer Qasim Naqvi abandon improvisation in favour of composition, utilising sophisticated rhythmic structures from North and West African folk traditions to weave a sonic tapestry of trance-inducing grooves. From close up one may see only dots, but when stepping back an undulating image reveals itself. “We didn’t want to create anything cerebral,” says Belyamani, “we wanted something visceral, something that would awaken our instinctive dance impulses.” 

“We wanted to make a record that sounded both musically futuristic and sonically vintage,” explains Israni, “and since the album never saw a proper international release, it is very exciting to see what might happen when more people are exposed to it. And to be aligned with Erased Tapes, whose enthusiasm for the music they release has done a lot for exposing unique instrumental and electronic music, makes it that much more interesting.”

Dawn of Midi - Nix

We know next to nothing about this band, other than they're from Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. You might even have guessed that from the distorted thumb pianos which are highly redolent of Kinshasa's most famous recent export, Konono No.1 - but Mbongwana Star (Mbongwana means "change", apparently) are a very different proposition. There's some very strange dubwise production, courtesy of Parisian and sometime Tony Allen collaborator Doctor L, some eerie postpunk-sounding guitar work, and an altogether unique vibe. They're coming to Europe in April and May and there'll be an album on World Circuit around then too. We will be paying close attention.

'Bumblebeez' producer and frontman Christopher Colonna - Australia’s answer to Pablo Picasso - steps out to the world with an extended player of pure, unadulterated sonic imagination that perfectly represents the ethos of Multi Culti's vibe. 
 
Largely written and produced in the backwoods of Hackney in 2014 and refined at the ‘BBZ HQ Braidwood 2622,’ the songs take cues from all over the place: classical composers, trips to South Africa, the electricity of the Diwali festival, peace of mind, French women recalling their sexual nightmares, yearning for the Outback & Global roaming. Layers of tropical sounds, a collection of myriad samples & bedroom beats all at play together in an alternate reality. These uncut diamonds were previously unreleased, but an early version of Ghana was included on Multi Culti Japan, which got support from Roman Flügel, Erol Alkan and Boris Dlugosch, among others. Exoticaspeakerjam was also exclusively featured on Tiga’s BBC Radio1 mix.

It's useless to categorize, and difficult to describe, but what matters most is that the listen is warm and rewarding. It's dense with ideas, but the whole thing is wrapped up in a light-hearted charm that feels extra-precious today.

Blast Off Through the Wicker documents Art Feynman looking for life in the lifeless, questioning what it means to be living.  There is a calm, disciplined pocket to be felt in everything Feynman does; krautrock slink, staccato bounce, and pentatonic bursts of Nigerian Highlife fuzz pour on the temporal canvas with unquestionable ease, never falling in the wrong place. Even more admirable is, that his “canvas” is a four-track tape recorder, and that Blast Off features no loops or drum machines despite its aesthetically faithful motorik and afrobeat underpinnings.  Nowhere is this fact more surprising than on album standout “Slow Down” which pulses along infectiously with a crunchy backbeat, and deftly arpeggiating bass lines that are so locked-in that it would be hard to fault an unknowing ear for assuming the whole thing is tediously programmed.

There are gentler sides to Blast Off that conjure the spacey tenderness of Arthur Russell inventively and respectfully, without adopting their muse’s palette wholesale. In this regard Blast Off is an endearing collection of songs that capture the ear with warm-yet-clear cassette aesthetics and spot-on musicianship, both of which form an angle that points lovingly to Feynman’s deep and varied influences. Make no mistake-- this one truly is alive.

Returning to Beats in Space after their debut 12" (and the label's debut release) in the fall of 2011, Paradis offers "Hémisphère" and "Je m'ennuie", another pair of sophisticatedly crafted, noir-pop songs from the young Parisian duo.

On the two tracks of their second 12", Paradis self-reflect to find an escape hatch away from themselves. The A-Side, "Hémisphère", a macabre story of a lonely guest of life determined to leave everything behind, defies the narrative's convention and captivates with pop melodies and up beats abound.

On the B-Side, "Je M'ennuie", lovers settle into late-night melancholic routines soundtracked by a brooding bass line, an achingly affective synth lead, and vocals that grin behind the disaffected front. Ultimately, hope prevails as both tracks beg the listener to leave their headphones behind for the global village's dance floor. From Paris to Cologne, from Buenos Aires to New York, in the words of Michel Polnareff, "On ira tous au Paradis."

Each 12" from Beats in Space features original artwork in considerate & serial form. The first 12" features artwork by Denise Kupferschmidt, a Brooklyn-based artist finding inner / outer space in the movement of line and assemblage of color. The 12" packaging constructed by Will Work For Good features a vinyl BIS logo cling. The 12" will be available on May 22nd, 2012 from fine retailers worldwide. The digital version will be available May 29th, 2012 from the drab internet universe.
