Responsible for a huge part of the development of the world’s biggest and most reputed electronic music scene, Ellen Allien has been active wearing various hats in music since the late 80’s / early 90’s as an artist, a DJ, a label owner, and a radio show host pushing other artists as far and large as Apparat or Modeselektor, even releasing the debut Moderat Album on her own BPitch Control, to pushing some of the earliest Ben Klock and Marcel Dettmann records all the way to being responsible for close to the entirety of Paul Kalkbrenner’s catalog for almost a decade…

Analogue warmth meets raw energy: This furious mixture made Andre Kronert a synonym for powerful and high-octane club sound, as a DJ as well as a producer. Since 1994 the head honcho of Odd/Even, Night Drive Music, 3rd Wave Music and Neurotron Music has set on fire countless parties and festivals, proving himself to be a major reason for escalating atmospheres and bursting dance floors from Dubai to Georgia.

In his productions Andre Kronert performs a mesmerizing balancing act between two worlds. On the one side, there is the raw energy and explosive power of his ecstatic, repetitive rhythms. On the other side his style is characterized by subtle build-ups, filigree sound textures and the warmth of analogue synthesis. For a good reason, since Andre Kronert has been an avid vinyl lover since he started DJing 15 years ago. During his live performances he exclusively relies on his beloved music machinery which includes no laptop. However, he does not regard himself to be a moralizer for the analogue movement: In the end, it’s all about fun!

His prime-time compatible music has been released on labels like WAD (Without Any Doubt), Stockholm Limited, Pets Recordings or ODD EVEN. The live act of Andre Kronert could already be heard in many different countries, using his civic name or presenting secret projects he already played at Berghain, at Panorma Bar, Rex Club in Paris or at Fusion Festival, to name a few. The track “Salzwasserliebe” made it into the preshow of Depeche Mode at the “Tour Of the Universe” and got played on more than 150 concerts in front of 60000 people. His thirst for new enterprises frequently reaches hyperactive dimensions and is the driving force behind his labels Odd/Even, 3rd Wave Music or Neurotron Music. So there’s a very good change that we’ll hear even more from Andre Kronert in the near future!

BBC6 | Our resident DJ Upstairs at the Open Arms this week is German producer and DJ Ellen Allien. Her incredible talent has seen Allien play at some of the world's most presitgious clubs including London's Fabric, Mondo in Madrid and she holds a residency at DC10 in Ibiza.

In dieser Folge des Telekom Electronic Beats Podcasts spricht Jakob Thoene mit @ellen-allien. Die DJ, Produzentin, Chefin ihrer Labels BPitch und UFO Inc. und gebürtige Berlinerin hat die aufblühende Technoszene ihrer Heimatstadt von Anfang an miterlebt. Die „Queen of Berlin“ spielte eine Schlüsselrolle bei der Verwandlung des zunächst lokalen Phänomens der Technokultur in eine international gefeierte Bewegung. Nach ihrem Schulabschluss Ende der ‘80er zieht sie zunächst nach London, um als Kindermädchen zu arbeiten und ihre Englischkenntnisse aufzubessern. Dort genießt sie die grenzenlose Freiheit des Londoner Nachtlebens, in Soho hört sie zum ersten Mal Acid House und verliebt sich in den Knall der Bassdrum auf der Tanzfläche. Ein Jahr später kehrt sie mit neuen Platten nach Berlin zurück, und findet einen Job als Barkeeperin im Fischlabor. Die Schöneberger Kneipe des späteren Tresor Gründer Dimitri Hegemann ist neben dem Ufo Club einer der ersten Orte Berlins, in dem Techno aufgelegt wird. 

Im Podcast spricht Ellen Allien über ihre ersten Erfahrungen als DJ in Clubs wie dem Tresor (Globus), E-Werk und dem Bunker, ein legendärer Ort, den sie im Januar 2021 im Rahmen der „United We Stream“ Initiative wieder bespielen durfte. Das Gebäude, das inzwischen die Boros Collection beherbergt, war zunächst ein Nazi-Bunker, lag während der DDR-Zeit in Ost-Berlin und wurde nach dem Mauerfall in den frühen ‘90er Jahren zum Club, in dem unter anderem die ersten Snax-Partys stattfanden. Anders als manche ihrer DJ-Kollegen, die Techno in den ‘90er Jahren erlebt haben, blickt Ellen Allien dennoch nicht allzu nostalgisch auf diese Zeit zurück, denn wie sie im Podcast verrät, hat sie damals nicht nur „Friede, Freude, Eierkuchen“ erlebt, sondern auch Sexismus und Rivalitäten zwischen DJs. Heute, sagt Ellen Allien, sei die Szene viel internationaler und die Beteiligung verschiedenster Akteure in der elektronischen Musikwelt stimmt sie optimistisch.
