TERANGA BEAT proudly presents BAI JANHA alias "Sweet Fingers" and his psychedelic steamroller KARANTAMBA. Composer, arranger, guitar player of GUELEWAR & IFANG BONDI, BAI JANHA is undisputedly the most important musician to have come from GAMBIA. Band leader of the groups BLACK STAR, WHALES BAND, FABULOUS EAGLES & SUPREME EAGLES, founder of the group ALLIGATORS who later became the GUELEWAR, BAI is the one who created the unique psychedelic sound in the region of SENE-GAMBIA, mixing traditional compositions with Soul, his musical innovations contributed to the domination of AFRO-MANDING music in West Africa for more than a decade.  

This record presents BAI JANHA with his last group, KARANTAMBA, a school for young musicians, in a totally unreleased recording, recorder in Thiès (Senegal) at "SANGOMAR" Club the 16th of August 1984. The double gatefold LP's liner notes and CD's booklet include more information and photographs outlining all the way of the living legend's musical career and the wicked percussive rhythms and compositions of this album. Herman Prime’s debut 12”, “Maajo” is a beautiful ode to spring and new birth. "Maajo" pays homage to Nigerian music, with its borrowed vocals from juju style’s King “Sunny” Ade. The track has a house foundation, which shows in its fat kick drums and sub bass groove, while the hypnotic Rhodes melody harkens to early minimal electronic pioneers such as Manuel Göttsching.

The B-side, “Maajo (Take Four)”, is a track of its own, a mutant revision of the emotional original. This version is not just a slightly altered copy but an electronic dub that takes the original to a completely different direction. Talking drums and a polyrhythm structure maintain the dreamy, Nigerian feel, but the dystopic, detuned synths have the scent of an underground techno bunker.

Jon Thureson, alias Herman Prime, has been open-mindedly DJing and producing music for 15 years. He has a broad understanding of musical language which helps him to infuse his various influences. With his strong background in house and disco, Jon often reaches beyond the limits of both genres towards new frontiers. His love affair with West African styles and electronic Krautrock shows on “Maajo”.

Seagull Records is a spin-off from disco rework factory Kojak Giant Sounds and “Maajo” is a slightly moodier and housier departure from the labels usual repertoire.

Frenzied Nairobi fire for you here, courtesy of a team-up between 14-legged troupe Sarabi, and Auntie Flo collaborator / all-round good guy Esa. The track's development is engrossing, forged in the crucible of a collective dedicated to the advancement of East African cultural interests, through live festival jams and lightning-quick studio sessions. It's too long and detailed to tell here – you'll have to cop the physical release for the full story splayed across the inlay.
This radio-ready version of "Koko's Vibration", mixed and produced by Esa and Ambrose Akula Akwabi (a the man known as the 'East African Mr Fingers', fact fans), adds a subtle gloss to the rough takes floating about the web, but loses not an iota of passion. That means spirited yelps, polyrhythmic drumming, hooks flying in from all angles, and those wicked Onyeabor-esque keyboard runs. It arrives soon as part of the Highlife Series; they've gone from Cuba to Kenya, and soon to Uganda. Like we said: real good music made with real good intentions by real good guys.
