3 QUESTIONS to LOUISAHHH:

Q: Thanks for being part of the family. Let's talk about your mix, your roots: How did these tracks change your life forever and why did you choose them?

A: For this mix, I tried to choose songs that formed my identity, both musically and personally; I think that so much of being a good DJ is being a devoted fan, and this mix is a love letter to the music that informed so much of who I’ve grown into. I am so grateful for these tracks; they saved and changed my life. I tried to capture a whole journey of beginnings, different seeds that were planted and the prismatic universes that ripple outward from them. Case in point, I started the mix with ‘Nightclubbing’ from Iggy Pop. This record was produced and co-written by David Bowie, another tremendous hero of mine. The first song I learned to play on guitar was Iggy Pop’s ‘The Passenger’, which was covered by Siouxie and the Banshees (whose track ‘Peek-a-Boo’ is featured later in the mix) and the snare on ‘Closer’ from Nine Inch Nails (track two of the mix) is a sample of the ‘Night Clubbing’ snare.  Maelstrom and I wrote a track called ‘Nightclubbing’ for our ‘Traces’ EP, that is in part an homage to this song. For me it’s a combination of memory and history and love that is woven throughout. Every song on this mix has stories like this. A lot of my passion for music has been inherited from my father (he worked with a few of the artists featured here, and was kind enough to take his eager, under-age daughter to see many of the acts when I was still to young to get into clubs and venues). He recently had a health scare and coming out of surgery (he’s fine now) he told me: "No one understands what music means to me like you to" (after he ordered the nurses to crank Steely Dan in his hospital room). This is kind of all of it, really. These tracks embody "what music means to me". They are memories and relationships, a whole life filled with the love of music and the people we get to share it with.

Q: You have recently released your debut album "The Practice of Freedom" on HE.SHE.THEY. What is the strong message behind this project?

A: This is an album about liberation and what that looks like spiritually, sexually, in death, in activism, in breaking and healing and loving.  

Q: As we see light at the end of the pandemic-tunnel: What are your plans for the near future and what can we expect next from you?

A: There are a few things on the horizon, though the future has never felt more uncertain. The deluxe edition of ‘The Practice Of Freedom’ will be out this summer, including all of the amazing remixes by so many artists I feel very blessed to have been able to work with, alongside some new tracks and unreleased artifacts from the recording of the album.
