FMB DISCORD MIXTAPE 002: La Piscine

Welcome to the second instalment of the FMB Discord Mixtape. Joining us this time, we welcome La Piscine.

I am a musician from Catalonia and have lived in London for 6 years. I started playing guitar and singing in punk bands as a teenager and for the last few years I've been producing electronic tracks and DJing. I like using samples from records I find and mixing them with more modern sounds. I also create my own edits that I play during my sets (these can be found on my SoundCloud).

I enjoy playing open format and making mixes that contain uplifting dance tracks, preferably with some interesting sound production happening!

I first heard about Bicep whilst listening to their episode on the Tape Notes podcast. I loved the way they explained their production techniques for some of their songs and also the way they organised and used their samples. Their music sounded both familiar and fresh, and I just thought the way they approached music production was very clever. On top of that, they sounded like genuinely nice and thoughtful guys!

Welcome to the third instalment of the FMB Discord Mixtape. Joining us this time, we welcome MDWILLS. Here are a few words from the man himself: 

Hey everyone,

It’s Matt here, but I go by my alias, MDWILLS. I’m a DJ and producer from Manchester, currently living in Newcastle since graduating from uni here. My introduction to electronic music and the dance scene stems from my big brother, who introduced me to Bicep several years ago, along with various other artists—and now, here we are.

I first started DJing at uni for a laugh, but it quickly became a passion of mine alongside producing music. I currently DJ at a few residencies here in Newcastle, which I began during my time at uni studying biomed. I’ve continued these gigs while working as a personal trainer.

Bicep have massively influenced my productions (I think I must have watched their Printworks live set a million times), along with many other artists, including Jamie xx, Overmono, Burial, Cameo Blush, Rival Consoles, the Cloudcore label, and so many others. Watching their lockdown set live with a projector and blasting speakers in my family home was unforgettable, so getting the opportunity to record a mix for them is incredibly special for me. Thank you for this opportunity.

This mix includes a lot of my favorite tunes at the moment, as well as a handful of my own productions. I hope you all enjoy it!

let’s get it started (don’t judge me remix)

We would like to think we have served up plenty of special treats in our podcast series so far, but this latest one is certainly one that many people will get very excited about. It is not often that Detroit key-figures step out and offer us a window into their current musical world, but that is what we have here from Sherard Ingram aka DJ Stingray. Famed for many reasons—not least for always DJing in a black balaclava—he is founder of the Urban Tribe super group with KDJ, C2 and Shake, was DJ for the legendary electro outfit Drexcyia and is also a fierce DJ and producer in his own right. He came up playing tough techno and electro in hardcore motorcycle clubs in the D, but is now a regular in the world’s finest underground spaces, where he pushes a dark, intense sound that is socially and politically charged. Shades of Miami bass and ghetto tech also characterise his work on labels like Shipwreck, Bleep43, [NakedLunch] and Unknown to the Unknown, and in 2016 he is as busy and prolific as he has ever been. This summer he plays a rather exclusive back to back set with Helena Hauff at our festival in Amsterdam. 

The mix he serves up is a great snapshot of what Stingray does - forces you to dance to his high tempo, high impact sounds. He mixes them quickly and slickly and there is a real sense of urban paranoia and future menace in every tune he reaches for. Sit back, then, and bask in the glory of a real master.
