In collaboration with Sadaa Sound Syndicate, we're honoured to present Sawt Syria: an exploration of club & underground music culture in Syria and its exilic diaspora in Europe. Captured in the summer of 2022, this two-part project showcases, for the first time ever, the most compelling Syrian DJs & producers of contemporary culture, shaabi sounds & rap.

The second segment – 'Exile (Europe)', shot between Amsterdam & Berlin – presents a 7-hour broadcast with 14 artists, followed by a video-essay in which they reflect on their changing artistic practices as they navigate their diasporic realities & make sense out of their experience away from home. 

C1 Collective has been inactive since Spring 2023.

Amsterdam born and raised DJ/producer BELLA represents uplifting house music. BELLA’s musical journey is a fusion of 90s house, adorned with the pulsating energy of acid, electro, rhythmic melodies and taking things proggy.

Her innovative approach to mixing genres comes to life in her much-anticipated debut EP released on Big Saldo’s Chunkers this year. What´s a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon? One option is to drive out of town to the beach and hang out with your friends. Crank up the volume of your car stereo and enjoy your own music selection while sipping beers and puffing joints.

Now imagine this scenario in a sub-saharan African metropolis of today. Add a bit of a traffic jam before you reach the beach, think of car stereos that blast out selections of Afro House, Kuduro, Kizomba and African Rap. And soon you are close to the vibe that Daniel Haaksman´s new single "Sabado" is all about. It´s a lazy, laid back uptempo track that puts the listener to an imaginary car park party on an African city beach front. It features the mighty guitar licks of Colombia´s Bulldozer, but has an allover South-African feel to it. Yes, Paul Simon´s "Graceland" is an influence here, but also all the hot new house track that comes out of South Africa and the Portuguese speaking African countries such as Angola and Moçambique. Thus the tune is called "Sabado", Portuguese for "Saturday".

For Oddisee, “The Good Fight” is about living fully as a musician without succumbing to the traps of hedonism, avarice, and materialism. It’s about not selling out and shilling for a paycheck, while still being aware that this is a business requiring compromise and collaboration.
 
It’s music that yields an intangible feeling: the sacral sound of an organ whine, brass horns, or a cymbal crash. It’s not necessarily the syllables, but rather what they evoke. A song like “That’s Love” is more than a declaration; it’s a meditation on our capacity to love and the bonds binding us together. Ambition and greed war with our sense of propriety. “Contradiction’s Maze” offers a list of paradoxes we all face (“I want to tell the truth when it hurts/but when it comes to me, I want the blow softened.”)
 
Oddisee’s production simmers in its own orchestral gumbo. You sense he’s really a jazzman in different form, inhabiting the spirit of Roy Ayers and other past greats.  The Fader’s compared him to a musical MC Escher, calling hailing his “grandiose and symphonic sound” and “relevant relatable messages.” Pitchfork praised his “eclectic soulful boom-bap.”
 
“The Good Fight” acknowledges the stacked odds, but refuses to submit.
 
It’s both universal and personal. The child of a Sudanese immigrant highlights the rigors of his own upbringing: his pregnant mother working the register until she was about to burst, his pops’ shuttered diner that couldn’t survive Reaganomics—the one that Oddisee drives past every time he returns home, just to remind him how quickly the world can turn bad.
 
It’s these minor details that add into something major. It’s testament to the indelible nature of art: when you can turn what you love into something that lasts.

It's not every day we get to feature psych-tinged post-rock epics on Debuts, but today is thankfully one of those days. "Momento Mono" is, for want of a better word, enormous. No boring intros here: right from the off it's all clatter and skronk, like walking into the practise room of a free jazz band in full hyperkinetic swing. The similarly grandiose imagery in Jacek Zmarz's video – timelapsed cosmos, ancient rituals and, er, swimming dogs – only reinforce the sense of awe.

The trio are seemingly aware of how easy it is to get lost tumbling through the jam after a while; it could easily sprawl out into the Can / Battles realm. Instead, they opt to pull the rug out around the halfway mark, landing a huge hook. The hard-edged organ stabs, booming drum fills and sense of careening acceleration continue until, finally, all falls down.

II will see release in the Autumn on Repeat Until Death.
