Rob Manga is one of the longest running selectors from Amsterdam. His fundamentals were set in the 90’s and early 00’s, where he played at numerous legendary venues and parties. His multi genre approach in his dj sets stems from an era of musical culture and wisdom. His roots can be felt in a broad influence of raw soulful music. Rob also partnered up with many national and international artists. As an artist he is well respected in the club and dancing community worldwide. He had appearances at stapled events like Berghain Panorama Bar, ‘’Milkshake Festival’’, ‘’Lowlands’’, ‘’Pride Amsterdam’’ “IsBurning Amsterdam, “Paradiso Amsterdam and ‘’Glitterbox’’. As an entrepreneur he was on the frontline of successful nights like ‘’Lost Grooves’’, ‘’Legends’’ and ‘’I Love Vinyl’’. He is a creative mind who is passionate about sharing his love for dance music across the globe.

Coloring Lessons Mix Series 060: Rob Manga

For this month’s show of Carhart WIP Radio, we are traveling to Amsterdam to celebrate 10 years of Dekmantel Festival. This year, the event extends over the course of ten days, with the addition of a conference program at Het HEM and Aan Het IJ, featuring workshops, panel discussions and live interviews.

Before becoming a globally renowned music festival,  operated as a series of local club nights, as well as a record label. The label @dkmntl launched in 2009 with an EP by duo Juju & Jordash, and fifteen years later, continues to release all manner of innovative club sounds, from house to experimental techno, by the likes of upsammy, Sam Goku, Olof Dreijer & Diva Cruz.

For this edition of Carhartt WIP Radio, Olf van Elden AKA @interstellarfunk, who currently runs and oversees Dekmantel Records, created a mix featuring mostly exclusive, soon to be released brand-new Dekmantel music. As ever, the mix is accompanied by an interview with our host van Elden, who gives insights on the label and its ties to the festival and global electronic music culture. "My approach to recording mixes always differs everywhere from concept to techniques. For this one, I used vinyl with DJ Tools sounds with an APC40 controller, Ableton and MPC 300. 70-80% of this mix is unreleased, original material without the use of record samples, but recorded on analog equipment instead including a Juno 106, MPC 300 and Fender guitar. It also features sounds from old Soviet cartoons about space.

As for concept and sound, this mix doesn't sound like one I would usually play live at a club or festival show. For me music is either information or energy — you can find both elements in this mix. Besides, it's not a recording of a live set; people will be listening to it at their homes. That's why I started with the most soulful material and sprinkled in some old favourites to hopefully reach a new audience of people who haven't yet listened to my music. I guess, we haven't 'shaken hands' yet but this is my way of saying welcome". - @BMBSpacekid
