Over the past 8 years or so we have had, along with Theo Parrish, the honour of playing the monthly residencies at a small basement club in Shoreditch, London with an impeccable sound system. After 20 years of operation, it was time to move on and close the doors on a place that has a lot to answer for in shaping modern club culture. To say this space along with the owner Ade’s singular vision was fundamental in our personal musical formation would be a complete understatement. 
 
On the day of their closing, manager Charlotte asked us if we’d put the system through its paces for the last time that the club would be open to the public. We set about packing the anthems from our respective residencies and on the night once the people were through the doors played 2 records in turn for the rest of the dance. We included tracks of our own and of friends that were made with that place in mind. Records like Daphni - Ye Ye and Four Tet - Pinnacles were made to first be played at Kieran’s nights there, and the Floating Points - Vacuum EP was born out of the CD-R night at the club, and its launch party was the trigger for Sam’s monthly residency.
 
We set this recording up just before the start of the night and unfortunately it distorts in places, but we make no apology for how joyfully noisy people get! The vibe in the room this night was typical of the club on any given night and we hope this recording captures just a fraction of the spirit of a Plastic People night.
 
A massive thank you from us to everyone that has come down to the nights over the years and supported our music there. We are truly humbled to have shared the music we love with people at this place, and your energy in turn has influenced the way we make music on an unfathomable scale. We also thank the bosses Charlotte Kepel and Ade Fakile for inviting us to the club and having faith in us over  these years! All the best for the future!

Little is known about Stump Valley, but the Italian duo sure did make an impact with their unassuming EPs on Off Minor and Uzuri in the last two years. Before that they had worked solo on numerous projects, and came together over a shared love of vinyl and with the aim of making something “old sounding but modern conceived.” They melt jazz and ambient moods into languorous house soundtracks that suck you down into the deep, and often remix their own material into more urban sounding, street influenced music as Mtrpls.

Their mix is unhurried and curious, with spacious jazz and churning, Rhodes laden grooves making way for raw broken beats and much more. A very real human heart lurks beneath every track, from the wild melodic cuts to the more hard hitting deep house thudders. Plotting an unpredictable but inviting arc, our latest podcast is as intriguing as the duo behind it.

There is no one quite like San Proper. The Dutchman is a rare and real character in a scene that is all too often devoid of genuine personality. It shows in the wild music he makes, the wonderful Red Light Radio shows he hosts and the often weird sets he serves up at clubs and festivals round the world. Releasing most often on Rush Hour but also on Dopeness Galore and Perlon, he can do dark minimal as well as big hearted soul and can lay down a big guitar riff or program an off kilter drum line all with equal élan. 

His Dekmantel podcast finds the Dr. dig deep into his vinyl collection and serve up 23 slabs of soul, funk and afro magic across two hours that feel very personal. Traversing scenes, styles and tempos with flawless mixing and blending, he tells a very colour tale that breaks all the rules of a usual mix yet still makes complete sense. It is the sound of a selector who has open ears and who, ten years since his first release, is as thrilling and unpredictable as ever.

For Uzuri, For Blauwdruk, For Everyone I Love - a Mix by Guus Christian

Here is a very unusual mix  since I decided to select records which i specifically used to play in  1994- 1996 . This mix includes vinyl which could be played with minimal to no pop and crackle, so of course i had to eliminate quite a lot of records which i would have loved to feature.   I am not including records which I continued to play regularly over the years (like Chez Damier, MAW, Cajual etc) and also  not including records from that era which i obtained in preceding years.  This is a small selection of what i actually played in bars and clubs in  Malta. In 1995 i got my first 'big' NYE gig but during  the previous 2 years i was  djing daily at home, in numerous bars and small events.  I never did a similar mix and I hope that these 2 hours of music bring you some nostalgia.  Please share with friends you know were partying in those years ! Enjoy. Owen
