What's Poppin (Remix)

Rap is poetry, poetry is rap. Some of the best rappers are poets themselves, finding ways to craft intricate verses out of the creative formation of words that goes well beyond crafting a hit. Platnume is the latest lyricist of this lineage who is coming to take over the industry. His ability to pen hit songs and catchy verses extends from his poetic background, and he’s ready to take it to the next level in this new stage of his career.

Platnume comes from South Jamaica Queens in New York — specifically, Rochdale Village Circle 4. He was interested in music early on — he inherited a passion for the craft from his father who was an artist and his mother’s nursing work ethic — and spent five of his teenage years making music. He found inspiration in poetry, which he describes as “a piece of art that allowed me to be creative with my words.” Idolizing Edgar Allen Poe for his innovative writing style and unimaginable manner of utilizing metaphors,

He loved music so much that he decided to major in it after graduating from York Early College Academy. Platnume went on to get an associates degree in recording technology from the Laguardia Community College. He found inspiration in Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Travis Scott, and J. Cole that informed his work as an artist and a producer. Additionally, he found time to attend the DJ Scratch Academy where he studied the fundamentals and techniques to DJ with vinyl records, completing his mission to become an all around hip-hop musician. 

Platnume has been showcasing the extent of his musical capabilities over the last few years with a series of high profile releases. On early songs like “909,” “Rax,” and “Freak,” the rapper’s melodic and lyrical dexterity are on full display — products of years that he spent developing his sound. Since 2019, he’s put some of his biggest songs on Spotify that are built around utilizing the elements of poetry that are able to tell the stories of his life. He’s collaborated with artists like Remo, Mike Classic, and Kiingshooter during the time sense and his “Freak” single caught attention across the internet for its simplistic, yet catchy refrain. Through his studies of poetry and music itself, Platnume has created and cultivated a unique sound that is separating him from his peers.

Platnume credits his success to the self-learned skills that he’s picked up along the way. Additionally, he credits Naxtrix from 8thflr.Productions as one of his mentors who helps him to develop his full palette of sounds. The experience and production from 8thflr has also allowed him to evolve as an artist. From a lyrical standpoint, he’s found who he is becoming on his journey thanks to learning to be comfortable with himself and his inspirations that range from music that was popular in the 1980s, modern rap, early trap music, and R&B. The way that music uplifts and brings people together is something that motivates him to keep going in his unique path. 

If Platnume has one goal, is to become one of the most influential artists in the entire world, having a record label to give artists the creative platform to succeed on their terms. He’s an avatar for people experiencing pain and having stories to tell — stories that involve happiness, love, and other serious moments. Platinum stands for power, love, ambition, time, newroth, unique, manifestation, and energy. It’s indicative of his poetic approach to music that is changing the game — one metaphor and simile at a time.
