This original tune was inspired by the book “Thirteen Moons” and tells, through melody, the escape of Cherokee Nation families through the Snowbird mountains of western North Carolina. This area, and the Cherokee families who still live there, are just across the mountain from Ducktown, Tennessee – the home location of Playing On The Planet. The pacing of the waltz & placement of the instrumentals relative to rhythm is intended to make the listener feel mournful and uncomfortable — just as our Cherokee brothers & sisters must have felt at the time of their escape. In concert we play this and Thirteen Moons together as a medley. Thanks to our guest Chris Jones on guitar.

Denny is a prolific bluegrass music songwriter having earned his playing and writing chops during his time spent on the Florida bluegrass music circuit. He even allowed a renowned bluegrass fiddle player, David Crow, to marry his daughter. Bluegrass music wouldn’t be bluegrass music without a song about love gone bad and this is Denny’s offering on that subject.

Traditional tune written around 1865 and kept alive one fiddler at a time through the generations. Taught separately to Fletcher Bright & Lisa Jacobi by 99 year old Bob Douglas, who played it live one year later on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry in celebration of his 100th birthday. Bob learned the tune as a youngster when he would walk for miles across the mountain to attend dances in Dayton, Tennessee. He heard it from a fiddler there and would hum it to himself all the way home at which point he would saw it out on his own fiddle. The fiddler at the dance had learned it from the composer. Fletcher and the musicians of Playing On The Planet along with Chris Jones on guitar went into the studio with the aim of keeping true to the old-time spirit of a fiddle player driving a 4-mule team along a dirt road next to a the roaring Ocoee River — can you feel the rhythm of the mules as they pull the copper laden wagon?

The very week that Lisa Jacobi moved to the area of Copperhill & Ducktown, Tennessee – federal officials busted a large, illegal moonshine distillery in the nearby community of Hell’s Holler. The shine was being carried out at cover of dark via 18 wheelers to the notorious Clermont Lounge in Atlanta. When Lisa penned this song, she gained some guidance from her friend, the NASCAR promoter, Humpy Wheeler (Charlotte Motor Speedway). This recorded version was recently licensed and used in the PBS series Roadtrip Nation, as well as by a nationwide television commercial for the State of Tennessee Department of Highways.

When Jarrod Payne first wrote this banjo tune, he named it Beer Thirty (which is typical of a 21 year old). When he turned 22, Lisa Jacobi convinced him to change the title to Beer Third Eye – she said it sounded more cosmic, but her real intent was to be able to sneak it past bluegrass festival music censors. We arranged this tune for the album with the intent of positioning it for licensing in television, movies and advertising. It has turned out to be one of our more popular tunes that we play on stage, but, we haven’t figure out how to play the reverse-guitar portion in a live setting. Keep an ear out for the chime at the very end of the tune, it is our friend & musical artist Caroline Wright who flew in from Hawaii to play the perfect zen note.

This is one of the most popular songs the band performs in their live shows. They've included it on all three  albums watching as it changes and grows with the passing years. It is extraordinarily special because Jarrod Payne (banjo) conceptualized this when he was 15 years old. At that time he didn't know that the translation of Fur Elise is "For Lisa." Lisa Jacobi is his band mate and founder of Playing On The Planet.

Lisa Jacobi wrote this song about the dead & wandering souls of coal miners when she was headed to the Gauley River in West Virginia for a whitewater kayaking trip. The reference to Indigo Child in verse two is worth looking up, as they do exist in the West Virginia area.

Yes, the band introduces the classic Bill Monroe tune Lonesome Moonlight Waltz with the theme from a popular computer game song Fake Wings played beautifully on a swamp stomper guitar by Jarrod Payne. Ben Surratt produced this medley with the intent of having Lonesome Moonlight Waltz come dancing in musically from a far-away place until it arrives into our presence. Fletcher Bright and Lisa Jacobi are playing the 3-part harmony fiddles.

Playing On The Planet and this/their version of Dueling Banjos was the live music presentation for the official 40th Anniversary Party for the movie Deliverance held at the prestigious Fox Theater in Atlanta, Georgia USA. How could we not do another release of an updated version of Dueling Banjos? – and our pals Horace Holden, Sr. and Payson Kennedy were the whitewater rafting consultants on the movie “Deliverance.” After the movie was released, they started the first whitewater rafting company in the southeastern U.S.. This song is the legacy of our mountains and rivers, and we are on a mission to keep it updated. Thank you to Clay Smith for working directly with us to grant us the recording rights for your father’s tune.
