Playtronica introduces a new podcast series, “Seeing Sound”, continuing our exploration of the unique spaces and opportunities that exist between what we see and what we hear. 

In the first episode of Seeing Sound, Paul Hanford immerses himself in the sonic landscape of film. He visits an arthouse cinema in Berlin with a hidden history, learns soundtrack secrets from cinephile musician Jim O’Rourke and speaks to acclaimed British director Peter Strickland, creator of cult classics ‘Berberian Sound Studio’ and ‘In Fabric’.

The second episode of Seeing Sound takes a literal turn, as Paul meets musicians touched and fascinated by the unique phenomenon of synesthesia; senses overlapping to create involuntary new ways of perceiving music. L.A. based beat genius Daedelus and multi-sensory auteur Portrait XO share their personal experiences.

The third episode of Seeing Sound finds Paul Hanford exploring how visuals can transform and recontextualise our emotional impression of music. His guests are Coldcut co-founder Matt Black, whose label Ninja Tune has stayed on the cutting edge of visuals since the halcyon days of British rave. Also joining Paul is director Lope Serrano, whose studio CANADA had collaborated on videos for the likes Dua Lipa and Tame Impala.

In this edition of Seeing Sound, Paul Hanford connects sound and movement, taking Berlin's U-Bahn to meet storied electronic musician Robert Henke, a forward-thinking founder of music production software, Ableton Live. Meanwhile, acclaimed dancer Kiani Del Valle unpacks her fluid approach to sonic space.

The fifth episode of Seeing Sound explores the revelatory experiences that sound can provide. Composer and artist Alifiyah Imani introduces Paul Hanford to the Spatial Sound Institute in Budapest, before we head over to the 4DSOUND system MONOM in Berlin to chat with co-founder and creative director William Russell. Meanwhile, multi-instrumentalist Andrew Pekler talks about composing a score for the phenomenon of 'Phantom Islands'.
