Melancholy - "a feeling of pensive sadness, typically with no obvious cause."

Melancholia is a compilation album featuring over 15 producers from the PLFProducers group. We're a bunch of artists who love the sound that Pretty Lights and others helped define, electro hip-hop soul. Every year we try to come together, and in the spirit of creating and sharing art, create a body of work centered around a theme.

This year's theme was "Melancholy" - to be interpreted however each artist preferred. All of the submissions this year really blew me away, and I hope everyone else enjoys these tracks as much as we all enjoyed making them.

Melancholia

Tell Me. is a downtempo boom bap vibe that rides over a piano hook that I layered some lofi vocals and synthy horn lines over. It features a distinct vocal sample I created through an AI program using a voice similar to that of 50 Cent that says, “Tell me its real, that feeling that we feel”. Essentially this line is asking for reassurance that euphorically-connected feelings of happiness, trust, closeness to others and enhanced emotional empathy won’t ever go away

This track captures a lot of emotions I was going through earlier this year. Burnt out, hopeless, and a bit lost. All I wanted to do was be a hermit and disappear from social settings because I had all of these mental battles with myself. A very groovy and moody track.

Pretty Lights is one of my favorite and most impactful artists, and one of the catalysts that lead me to the sounds I make now.  So, for this song, I took a play out of the Pretty Lights playbook and dug through my "crates" of unreleased songs I had written, sampled one of those songs, and gave new life to an old idea.
