I fell in love with Joy Electric over a decade ago. There was just something about buzzing, whirring synthesizers and melancholic melodies that did it for me. The few friends I’ve shared it with over the years never understood my devotion to what seems like esoteric electronic music, but Ronnie Martin’s saccharine synthpop taught me to take melody seriously.

Both prolific and obscure, Martin never settled on one sound; every album was an experiment with textures and timbres. One song, however, is for me the indubitable flagship of his singular songwriting. “The Boy Who Never Forgot” is at once hook-laden yet reserved, easygoing yet wistful—the type of configuration I aim for in every song I write. My cover of this gem serves as a tribute to the synthpop wizardry of Joy Electric. As you listen, I hope you feel just a little bit of that magic that inspired me as a teen.
