Excerpt from Kero: Being Korean-American, I try to keep in tune with current music from my motherland as well as the music from other Koreans around the world. In my latest mix “Seoul to LA” (succeeding my Plug Famalam and Uptempo mix series), I decided to try something I’ve never done before and present songs from my favorite Korean and Korean-American artists. Most people are familiar with most of the formulaic K-pop hits but as an avid music fan, I’ve wanted something more from Korea. In the past there were only a handful of quality groups and artists that I could say were publicly releasing dope hiphop/r&b/electronic music in Korea, but now I believe we are at a historical moment. I believe Korean music is growing like never before, and even independent artists are bleeding into the mainstream and even topping charts.

I used to be blown away when I’d tour Japan and see Japanese people vibing out to my stuff while I was rapping on stage. They didn’t understand 90% of what I was saying, but they’d always tell me after the show that they don’t understand the words, but they feel the vibe. I always wondered why it was never like that in America before the mid 2000’s. No promoter would ever throw a foreign hiphop show or attend one if they didn’t know what they were saying. Times have changed though, and America is now in that position. Even if you don’t understand what is being said in this mix, I hope you will feel the vibe like the Japanese did. This is Seoul to LA.
