Norm De Plume's Top Plucks - A Plumage Exclusive

Norm De Plume enrols Danish wonder-kid Paxton Fettel for another joint 4-track EP (vinyl- only). There’re 4 original tracks, 2 from each producer, split by side. Another tasty, collaborative release brimming with deep, low slung and mid tempo goodness.
The title of this EP is rather fitting, seeing as Paxton Fettel has already make the trip from Denmark’s capital to London when he played to his 1st UK audience back in May at the 2nd Plumage Label Night in Hackney. The young Dane has been slowly but surely growing his profile with 3 previous EPs and now an outstanding debut album on the label he co-runs: Greta Cottage Workshop. His recent EP on Apersonal also made some serious waves amongst the deep house fraternity. Norm De Plume joins Mr. Fettel on the bill at Culturebox in København mid-July and then the two will reunite once again to play Norm’s 3rd & final UK Plumage party for 2015 on 1st Aug and back in East London.

A1 Paxton takes us deep, lifts us up, and grooves us out with Ambling Waves In Eternity. Lovely piano motifs and repetitive synth lines keep the track moving whilst the lush pads drench your soul in deepness. A live bass line and organic syncopated acoustic drums complete the package and give a unique groove, something we’ve come to expect from Mr. Fettel. Far out!

A2 Marble Street feature’s a quirky Hawkins-esque computer vocal and loads of lovely Rhodes licks and ad-libs. We have analogue synth stabs and a central running synth motif that drives the track along. Hard-hitting drums with plenty of toms and reverse claps punch you into the rhythm. Those lovely analogue pads are back too, and there are some really tasty hi-hat and cymbal routines as the track progresses, all sounding as clean, warm and natural as a morning, summer walk in the Alps!

AA1 Norm De Plume takes things super-deep and slightly dark with his 1st cut: Rhythm & Sound. A filtered piano, present throughout is the backbone of this track, but that’s by no means all there is to this deep, driving, heads-down affair. Synth stabs, crying moog ad-libs and a swelling, pulsating Rhodes build the pressure and tension, before the sub-bass (line) is unleashed and sets the track on it’s trajectory, destination deep! We’re treated to a key change before the track breaks and then those Rhodes chords come into their own and unleash their power to bring the track to a ghostly climax.

AA2 Step In Time see’s Norm return to the tempo he knows and loves: 105bpm – it just doesn’t get groovier than this if you lay down your drums right.... An ultra-dusty disco drum break is reinforced with Norm’s favourite post-produced kicks, snares and hats. The result: heavy, heavy, swinging drums on which to place funky octave clav licks and that favourite organ sound of his, that pulsates away and is used to great rhythmic and harmonic effect, layered, chopped and in a rising 4-chord motif. The bass line follows the organ and a filtered disco vocal snippet is introduced...all, then becomes clear, we’re going to roll! We get a couple of nice breakdowns, with just bass and drum (and some tasty Simmons high pitched toms interjecting for good measure). Then the final build before Norm unleashes both full bass & organ – a deep n’ slow disco monster and make no mistake!

With a forthcoming EP on Midnight Riot in late 2017 Norm De Plume also makes a welcome return to his own label Plumage in 2017 nearly a full 2 years since it’s last release in 2015. PLUMAGE05 is Norm’s 3rd solo EP for the imprint.

A1 New Flow is vintage NDP fodder it’s just the tempo that has risen. Two bars of obscure disco gets lifted, chopped & filtered. The emerging source material merging with Norm’s own synth lines / swells and chopped vocal stabs - all underpinned by tight, chunky, grooving drums. Deep-Disco-House the way we like it.

B1 Another Flow see’s Norm explore more of his own original musical composition with this slightly deeper, more electronic cut. A soul vocal sits upon deep pads and a driving, gritty 1- note bass line. Pads and synths swirl and build and we get some wild modulation on the filters before the track breaks to slowly introduce a repetitive, rolling & pounding motif over which Norm lays some signature pads and a lovely simple lead-synth line.

The police station was not the type of place for an ego or arrogance. It was a place in which to act natural, to be cool and made up - pristine, polished and clean.... whatever that means. People came and went as he sat waiting upon the stiff metal framed chair which groaned beneath his eager weight. It was as if they had chosen to make it as uncomfortable as possible, not even a victim of criminal activity would be granted comfort in the warmth of an armchair. It was the job of the authority to simply remind anyone who took foot in that space that they were the boss and you didn't want to ever end up back here again. 

Saine is set to release a four track EP on the illustrious Delusions Of Grandeur, a favourite amidst house music heads and those who love to dance. This one has a sweet groove with a deep moving bassline.

INKSWEL drops a drippin bom bap house EP on Princely, this is music!

The 2nd release of Princely Records is what happens when you ask a b-boy for a house record - an EP dripping with boom bap stylings, sampling classic soul and hip hop, with beats that shuffles and drops at the right moments that creates a funky tension. “Moving In The Shadows” is also an opportunity for Inkswel to pull together a worldwide network of friends for collaborations, featuring American Midwest and Southwest vocalist A. Billi Free on the title track “Moving In The Shadows”, Australian vocalist Luka on “Feeling Higher” and house, disco and dub remixes by Henri Le Blanc (Australia), Don Dayglow (UK) and Beatfanatic (Sweden) respectively. Mastering of the EP is done by none other than the legendary Martin Iveson or more well-known as the nu jazz/soulful house master Atjazz.

Inkswel has been a very busy producer of late. The understated cool of Inkswel - the "ex-bboy, that's where the name Inkswel came from, think graffiti" producer from Australia who has done his rounds in Berlin, London and Amsterdam before settling back DownUnder - is not something he shouts about himself but his impressive repertoire of releases speak for themselves. 

In the last 10 years since 2009, Inkswel has consistently littered EPs and two full length albums with a camp of quality labels such as Edinburgh's Firecracker, Melbourne's own Wax Museum, Sonar Kollectiv, Tokyo Dawn, Hot Shot Sounds, This Thing, Boogie Bash, Dopeness Galore and Lumberjacks In Hell in Amsterdam, MCDE's Faces Records, Portland's Omega Supreme, Croatia's Burek release with remixes by Iron Curtis, DJ Nature and IG Culture, UK's Wolf Music and KAT, Chicago's The Playground, Spain's Pulp Music and in 2016, a full length album "Unity 4 Utopia" on legendary UK label BBE / Berlin's OYE Records and "The Sound" LP on live music focused UK label Apparel Tronic.

@norm-de-plume is an artist that we have followed for the last couple of years since we launched LV online and he has been behind some excellent releases over that period combining the coolest of disco licks with super solid house production.
