The war was so long ago.
I was young when it broke out. Too young to be drafted. Too young to be of use when the frontlines broke. At first we thought that once the dust had settled, they'd at least let us live as servants or slaves. We were wrong.
Chaos when Licorice's men reached our home. The candy-cannons roared over and over and our orchards were razed flat to the ground. Seeing no alternative, I hid under an overturned tree and waited.
It was hours before King Kandy's troops arrived, and by then, it was all over.

I remember nothing of the days following. Everything was consumed by my grief. When I came around, I asked everyone I saw whether they had seen any other survivors. Fruitless. It took weeks, but eventually I resigned myself to the fact that I was the last of the plum trolls.

King Kandy personally saw to it that I would have my share of land after the war ended. Licorice's remaining troops were hunted down mercilessly for their wanton acts of cruelty. However, I found no solace in their execution.

I remember only bits and pieces of what our life was like before. Picking plums, baking pies, and singing songs. The melodies of all but one have gone from me - all but this. The song that they sung when they went to war. My father, my brothers, and all the rest, proudly marching out, and the women and children waving from the treetops.
We could never have imagined what was to follow.
