he city came alive after midnight — not with people, but with motion.
Lights flickered across the skyline like warning signals, drones buzzed through the air in tight formation, and the streets vibrated with a low, relentless rhythm that felt like it was rising from the earth itself. No one knew where the sound came from. No clubs were open. No cars were moving. Yet the bass rolled through the concrete like a heartbeat.
A fast one.
A dangerous one.
Tara sprinted across the rooftop, boots skidding on the wet surface as she vaulted over a ventilation unit. Behind her, the sky cracked open with a streak of red light — another pulse from the invaders. The air shimmered with dust, glowing like embers suspended in the wind.
She didn’t look back.
She couldn’t.
The DnB signal in her earpiece was the only thing keeping her focused — a coded transmission from the underground resistance. Fast breaks, distorted bass, and a pattern hidden inside the rhythm that only trained ears could decode.
“Sector 7 breached. Evac route compromised. Keep moving.”
She leapt to the next rooftop, landing hard, breath sharp in her chest. The red dust swirled behind her, forming shapes — tall, angular silhouettes that moved with impossible speed. They didn’t run. They glided, like shadows carried by the wind.
Tara ducked behind a satellite dish as a beam of red light sliced across the rooftop, turning metal to ash. The dust creatures were getting closer. She could feel the air tighten around her, vibrating with their presence.
The bass in her earpiece intensified — a rolling, metallic growl that synced with her heartbeat. The resistance was sending something new. Not a warning.
A weapon.
The frequency shifted, rising into a razor‑sharp pattern that cut through the air like a blade. The dust creatures recoiled, their forms flickering. Tara seized the moment and sprinted toward the fire escape.
Down the ladder.
Across the alley.
Through the shattered window of an abandoned train station.
Inside, the world was silent — until the bass dropped.
The entire station lit up with blue light as hidden speakers activated, blasting the new frequency. The dust creatures screamed without sound, their bodies fracturing like glass under pressure. Tara stumbled back, shielding her face as the red haze exploded into harmless particles.
When the noise settled, the station was quiet again.
A figure stepped out from behind a control panel — a young engineer with headphones around his neck and a portable transmitter in his hands.
“You made it,” he said. “The new bass pattern works. It disrupts their form.”
Tara exhaled, adrenaline still burning through her veins.
“So the music really is our weapon.”
He nodded. “Drum & Bass saved the city tonight.”
Outside, the red dust began to clear.
Inside, the speakers hummed with the last echoes of the frequency that had turned the tide.
And Tara realised something:
This wasn’t just survival.
This was a rhythm.
A rebellion.
A beat strong enough to fight an invasion.
