When Plushgun toured with Nightmare of You for the sumer of 2009, the bands waged a Michael Jackson-inspired prank war. I decided to put an end to it, by putting way more thought and effort than necessary into the fiasco by creating a mashup of Nightmare of You's "My Name is Trouble" and Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean". This is the result. It's also sprinkled with some extra samples from both acts. I did the composition live with Ableton.

This is the first track I ever mixed together. I did it last year as an entry for the Public Enemy/M-Audio/Obey remix contest, which I decided to do on a whim, out of nowhere. I thought it sounded cool, submitted it and then totally forgot about it. That is until a few months later when I got an email informing me that it had been chosen as one of the finalists. I couldn't believe it. I didn't end up winning, but it opened my eyes (and ears) to the idea that this could be a valid medium for me to experiment musically, and that people other than myself enjoyed what I had made.

So, being my first take at this, I had no software other than Garageband at my disposal. It was a series of trial and error, and lining up wave forms. No beat matching, no warping, just good old fashioned press-play-and-hope-for-the-best. 

The track is a mix of Public Enemy's "Harder Than You Think" acapella, "Lapland" by Ratatat, "Sound of Silence" by Simon & Garfukel, a short original synth lead line, and a ton of samples from a Cartoon Sound FX cd.

"Skull Rock" refers to a rock in Massachusetts that is adorned with a vast, impressive mural of skulls piled atop each other by graf artist, Ichabod. Thought it made a cool name for my contest submission.
