"Whistle Hole - Rustic Tin Whistle Humming" [v1.0]

The idea of this sound appealed to me for the first time when recording an experimental soundtrack for a short film - "The Journey" (soundtrack nominated to the "Best Soundtrack Album 2013" by Screen Australia/APRA - better luck next time...) - basically humming/singing into the tin whistle while playing it. Chaotic interference of air and sound waves is always bringing fresh results - no two takes are identical! This library captures that sonic experience: fragile, imperfect yet persistently sustained sound! 
Haunted border-lining with comical. Industrial yet spiritual. Ugly yet beautiful.

The Witch Doctor

"The Witch Doctor" (2016)

This is an archival recording of my grandfather's piece "Nad Prosną" ("At The Prosna River") from the 60's. The orchestra and choir conducted by the composer. The audio is remastered from an old reel-to-reel player. He dedicated the song to his wife - my grandmother. 

Though the words in this recording are inaudible, this beautiful poem draws from the local mythology of the region and the city - Calisia (Kalisz) where Prosna flows, is known to be mentioned by Ptolemy as one of the "Amber Road" cities and is one of the oldest cities in Europe.

"Sunset in the Hourglass" (performed by Robin Meiksins - flute)

This track is coming from album "Moonrise". It is inspired by an Icelandic legends about Mount Hekla - a volcano considered by ancients to be a gate to the underworld. It features two Wheeled Fiddles (or Hurdy-gurdies ;), overtone flutes, Irish whistle, Guitars, lot of drums, Mongolian throat singing, more drums and a wee bit of electronics ;)
It is imperative to mention that this piece was written originally around 5 years ago which is long before Icelandic volcanoes become "cool" ;) ...

'Tamashi' (jap. soul, being) is a soundtrack album created for a dance theater spectacle « Au fil du Nô et du Butô ». 'The Re-birth' is a second movement from this 1h10m release.

"2)	The re-birth:  

Utai: Kocyo/Shité: apparition of the holy spirit of the butterfly / becoming human  

In its mother’s bosom, the child finds time to grow, time is patient and the child-butterfly grows within the chrysalid. All transformations demand time. The caterpillar growing in the chrysalid takes the hues of the surrounding leaves and branches. Likewise, the first movements of an infant child are in constant relation to its mother. A butterfly can await several months before it emerges into the outside world only to live for a few days at most. The lifespan of a butterfly is a symbolic reminder of the value of each and every gesture of life. The child becomes a being of flesh and starts adapting it’s movements to the world when he takes his first steps. The child is aware that as clumsy as they may be, those first few steps are precious. Nature is capable of marvelously surprising tricks..."

The Re - Birth

"Patience" - the fifth track from "Tamashī". The piece features my recent addition to my double-reed collection - 'hichiriki' (篳篥) - a high-pitched Japanese instrument with a long tradition through Gagaku music and Shinto celebrations. Below, a short excerpt from the program notes that inspired the piece (courtesy of Human Dance). 

The album will premiere together with the theatrical performance by Francoise Jasmin and Kiyoshi Kawara on the 8th of March 2020. 

5) Patience:   
Utai: Ama/Shité: the spirit of a mother remembering her child.
Penelope, ​yet another sculpture by Antoine Bourdelle, depicts a sense of mindfulness to the world.  In her journey through life Shite is in a constant state of mindfulness. In this, she resembles a samurai. Her gestures allow her to move with strength and precision in relation to her environment. She moves forward, awaiting any unforeseen turn of events to take place without however measuring the toll of time on the substance of life. Such is the tapestry she weaves without ever completing it.

Patience

Piotr Nowotnik composes contemporary chamber music, world fusion, music for theatre, film, and games, drawing from his diverse experience as collaborating artist, composer, and sound designer.

He graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in Music Composition and finished his Master degree at the University of Melbourne and Melbourne Conservatory of Music. Currently, Piotr’s works are being published by Wirripang Pty Ltd and performed in China, France, Australia and the USA.

He continuously engages in collaboration with artists from a variety of genres and disciplines: from Musique Concrete production for Butoh dance theater in Paris, through his involvement in a live music scene in Australia, Europe and the USA.

His recent commissions include music for Melbourne Fringe Festival, Pleroma Theater from Hong Kong, Human Dance company from Paris, soundscapes, and soundtracks for Melbourne-based 'La Mama' theatre. He worked as sound designer on “Steppenwolf: A Musical Retelling” production developed by The New School in Manhattan, New York; collaborated with New York-based choreographers and theatre artists.  

In 2016, Piotr has been commissioned to compose music to a broadway-style musical currently in development by Pene Patrick - an Australian writer and director. Piotr is also working as an orchestrator on a theatrical show developed by Los Angeles-based duo: composer Jess Platt and writer Mark Massi.

In 2015, Piotr became the first-ever AMPlify participant as he was chosen to collaborate with DJ/producer - Marlo Hoogstraten. His unprecedented use of unusual instruments and organic sound in Trance music resulted in the release of new pieces and live tour in Sydney and Melbourne in 2016.

His soundtrack album for “The Journey” (a film by Marco Kamareddine premièred at the Cannes Festival in 2013) has been nominated for “Best Soundtrack Album“ award (APRA Screen Awards 2013).

He is a finalist of Indie Gathering Scoring Competition (Ohio, 2010) and a recipient of Billilla Artist in Residence programme (2010-2011).

To this day, Piotr composed three LP albums with theatrical music, three world music fusion projects with his band ‘Umanee’ (2004-2008), one film score album and two solo releases.
