For Liverpool’s Light Night this year BBC Radio Merseyside’s “Popular Music Show”, the nation’s longest-running alternative music programme is responding to the one-day Festival’s theme of “Ritual” with “The Ritual Of Retail”, a project to get new local music played in shops through the medium of their in-house sound-systems. 
On Light Night (Friday May 17th) from late afternoon until closing time new and original music by four Liverpool-based musicians will be played in five City Centre shops. The four musicians are Stephen Cole,  Germanager, Chloe Mullett and Esa Shields. The participating shops are the new Lush store on Church Street, News from Nowhere, Grin  and Mi Vida on Bold Street and Total Recall Vintage on Seel Street.
Visitors to the shops will be able to hear 15 minute segments of music introduced by the voices of the musicians and if they want to hear the full set of sounds they will be broadcast in full on “The Popular Music Show” at midnight on the Sunday after Light Night (May 19th)
Programme producer Roger Hill welcomed the co-operation of the local shops. “Shopping is a ritual after all, so it’s good to complement that with some new and fascinating music instead of the usual soundtracks and muzak. Our programme has always been about music’s relationship with places and unique locations.”
