“I know we’re not the same, but these days we’ve all got a bitter story,” begins the new Pocket Sounds single, The Way Home. It’s true, everyone’s world has been shaken up. We’re all hoping to get back to where our homes feel like home again. “Our safe home seems to be fading” Mike StClair, Pocket Sounds’ creator, laments in the chorus. It’s not just a metaphor. StClair himself moved from his Austin, TX residence of 7 years during the lockdown. It got him thinking about the true meaning of a home. Is it simply a shelter, or is it also safety, a comforting environment, a state of mind, a place shared with loved ones? Ironically, as we’ve sheltered in place, many of the rest of these things have seemed in danger of slipping away. The ballad’s loose feel, quick swells and cascades seem to capture this uncertainty, like the path forward that may have slipped from sight. But the rhythm is never lost. Whether we “look up to the stars” or somewhere else for guidance, “we’ve got to keep our faith” that we’ll find the path back home. The Way Home, recorded remotely by StClair and mixed by Jonas Wilson, founder of Mr Pink Records, captures a snapshot in time of the uncertain world we currently live.
