You could ask any Podiatrist: “What’s the number one problem that walks through your front door on a regular basis”, and they will all say HEEL PAIN. 
It’s funny, many people think heel pain is directed to being over-weight, and YES weight can be a factor, but we see dozen of athletes limp into our clinic every year and most of them are in really good shape, with no weight issues at all. 
So this goes to show that heel pain can occur in anyone, the ATHLETE and the Weekend Warrior. 
There are many forms of heel pain, but the most common type is the one that develops directly underneath the heel. 
This is the one that really hurts when you get out of bed in the morning, or when you after you’ve been sitting for some time, but once you get warmed up the pain seems to settle down. 
If you don’t treat this particular problem early you will develop scar tissue and this results in further damage long-tern AND this is why it’s important to see a Podiatrist.

Let's Talk Feet - Week 2 - Heel Pain

This week I want to talk about your education, or more importantly who is educating you? As a general rule, you should never get your marketing education from the same person who is trying to sell you advertising, and this applies to all forms of advertising, both offline and online.&nbsp;  The Sales Rep has one job to do: sell you advertising. And that’s what they’re going to do. It’s not their fault if you’re naive. When I first moved to Cairns from the Gold Coast my business boomed, even without me gaining any additional business knowledge. But in all the excitement, I almost went broke because I signed up for advertising that was a bad fit for my business and my target market. I was led to believe that reach was more important than frequency, and I overspent and blew my marketing budget. It was a painful learning experience, and it took me a few years to fully recover, but there was no one to blame other than myself. Hindsight Hindsight is a great teacher, and this is why I know for a fact you need to understand marketing, even if it’s just the basics. This is why I think you have to have a business mentor who has experience in dealing with sales reps and extensive marketing experience. If your Sales Rep invites you to a marketing workshop, put on by their company, it’s okay to attend, but don’t sign anything at the event and be aware that their opinions will be biased. Radio is always better than television – all you need to do is ask your Radio Rep., and TV is far better than radio, ask your Television Rep. And newspaper-advertising trumps them both – just ask your Newspaper Rep. And if you were confused about online marketing versus traditional offline marketing, don’t be concerned because they will both tell you why their product is better, and they can even back it up with statistics and flashy charts, so they must be right. Media Agencies You may think it’s more comfortable to work with a media agency instead of individual Sales Reps and this may be true. You only have to deal with one shark instead of multiple sharks, but remember, one big shark can do more damage and do it faster than a pack of smaller sharks just taking smaller bites. The big difference with a media agency, though, is they will help you plan your media campaign as well as buying advertising space on your behalf, so if you’re busy, this may suit you perfectly; however, you need to check the credentials of the company before committing. Who have they worked with in the past? Can you contact any past clients? If the media agency is just a one-person company with a business name, you want to see their resume and review their experience. Check them out just like you would any employee. Beware The Con If you’re approached with an advertising proposal over the telephone, always request information via email and ask for a contact number so you can call them back and verify their existence. A few years back my Receptionist received a telephone call from a Police Officer wanting to speak with the business owner urgently. Well, of course, they got me because it was the Police. When I got on the telephone, he quickly explained it was not a Police matter, so there was no need to be concerned. Instead, he was calling to find out if I wanted to advertise in the local Police Journal. I had come highly recommended, but he couldn’t recall the person (of course not because he was making it up). After his long speech, he informed me I could pay via credit card, over the telephone. I asked if he could email me the information so I could think about it and he said he couldn’t because he didn’t have an email account (that’s odd). He also couldn’t fax the information because he didn’t have a fax machine, and finally he couldn’t give me a return telephone number because he did not know what it was. FMF #27 - You Can't Polish A Poo (Part 3)

Donna Patane is a highly qualified Lawyer and Trademarks Attorney based in Cairns, and when it comes to winning a dispute in court over the use of a business name, the person owning the trademark is holding the gun, and the person with only a business name registration is holding&nbsp;the sword. Donna's&nbsp;advice is don't take a sword to a gun fight, as you will lose every time.&nbsp; In this episode we discuss:  Why small business owners need to protect their business names Trademark rules are similar in Australia, USA and the rest of the world (except&nbsp;China) The four entities, Company names, Business Names, Domain Names and Trademarks, and which is more powerful in a court of law.&nbsp; A business name is there to protect the consumer, not the business owner. WOW!!!  Advice for all business owners: Make sure you check the ASIC website for company and business names registrations. Also, check domain registrations and quirky variations using numbers and letters, and go onto IP Australia.&nbsp; If you considering selling overseas, you need to check the World Intellectual Property Organisation and Global Brand Database. You can also lodge your trademark with customs to prevent imports that may breach your trademark.&nbsp; You want to make sure you are holding the gun at all times.&nbsp; Timeline You can register a trademark even if you're not using it yet, but you have 5-years to use it otherwise someone else can apply for NON-USE. Also, if you've been using a trademark and stop using it for 3-years someone can ask for NON-USE. You then need to prove it is being used.&nbsp; Taglines If you have a tagline for your business, it should be registered as a trademark if you want to protect it and it should be registered separately to your&nbsp;business name.&nbsp; Products: Apple and CocaCola have a massive amount of product and name trademarks, and this is what added value to these companies over the years. Some companies didn't protect their names sufficiently, such as ESKY and Trampoline and their names became common language.&nbsp; Added Value A trademark adds value to your business because you're holding the gun and this is why McDonald's&nbsp;hold so much value. Banks will loan money based on a recognisable name.&nbsp; Do It Yourself You can register your trademark, or you can use a trademark attorney, and yes it will cost more, so to reduce costs you can do a lot of the initial groundwork and investigation yourself before seeing a lawyer.&nbsp; Classes When you register a trademark for good and services, there are 45 different classes it can be registered under, so it's essential to go through this list and see what applies to your business&nbsp;and business name.&nbsp; Classes allow two similar trademarks to exist, as long as they are proving different goods and services.&nbsp; Monday Morning Tip Go straight to IP Australia and the Global Brand Database and check your name. If it is not registered, then register it as soon as possible. What is a professional referrer? A professional referrer is industry specific, meaning it is a referral that comes from someone else in your specific industry. For example, in the health industry a Physiotherapist may receive a referral from a GP or Podiatrist, an Accountant may receive a referral from a Financial Planner or Bank Manager, and a Plumber may receive referrals from a Carpenter.&nbsp; When you receive referrals, it's important to nurture them by maintaining regular contact because a referral you receive today could be gone tomorrow, but it's not always your fault.&nbsp; If you're an Accountant and you've been receiving referrals from a Lawyer for years, and then suddenly they stop, there could be reasons out of your control:  A family member has set up an accounting practice A new Accountant has come to town and has done a better job than you at maintaining contact  More often than not referrals are lost because you take them for granted, so here are a few tips to help nurture your professional referrers.&nbsp; Top Ten Professional Referrer Tips  Personal Visits: Go and see them one-on-one so they can put a face to a name. When was the last time you did this? Say Thank you: After your visit, thank them for their time and when you receive a referral always acknowledge it and once again thank them for trusting you.&nbsp;&nbsp; Send Emails: An email is great to use because it's fast and you can share information with ease.&nbsp; Email Newsletters: Just make sure your newsletters are not boring and all about you. (e.g., Golf Day) Acknowledge Significant&nbsp;Days: Everyone sends cards and gifts over Christmas, and because there are so many, yours will be lost.
