Portland, Or. composer/producer Chad Crouch pays homage to the sounds of the New Wave eighties with "Night Tracks", an analog drum machine and synth-forward collection of songs that evokes both mellow evening moods and nostalgia.  As with so many of Crouch's works, melody and expression is at the heart of the song cycle, achieved here primarily with electric piano.  It's a unique chill-out suite perfect for background and foreground listening alike.

Happy Earth Day!  This is a track that I had on my hard drive for well over a year, and still isn't slated for release until July 17, 2020.  It was always an outlier: long (7.5 min), bemused, spacey, and somehow charming.  Finally when the time came to give it a name, "Pale Blue Dot" floated into my mind and it just clicked with me.  Pale Blue Dot refers to the inspired writing of Carl Sagan, based on the famous photograph of Earth from 6 billion kilometers away, which contemplates the profound significance and insignificance of our only home planet.  Google it!

Concept Beats Vol. 3: Lakira

Lakira

For two decades Chad Crouch helmed the HUSH Records label, helping to launch the careers of The Decemberists, Peter Broderick, Loch Lomond, Laura Gibson, and many others. While handling the day-to-day operations of HUSH, Crouch was also churning out his own instrumental music under the pseudonym "Podington Bear". 2017 was a watershed year for Crouch. His father died, he upended his work life, and he finally pulled the plug on the moniker that grew increasingly irrelevant. (“Podington Bear” was a reference to podcasting, the original distribution method for his music.) In many ways 2018 represents a complete restart for Crouch, so getting back to the essence of songwriting seemed both appropriate and essential.
