Poembeat is a project by Alexander Moeckl, a composer and multi-instrumentalist based in Augsburg, Germany. Poembeat uses historical recordings of poetry readings, often by the poets themselves, as the basis for compostions ranging from pop idioms such as blues, indie pop, and dub reggae to John-Cage-style sound collages. Using music to bring both historical and contemporary poetry to live, Poembeat's fusion of poetry and music was hailed as "a great listening experience" by German national public radio Deutschlandradio Kultur. The work of Poembeat features a wide range of German poets, but also readings of Baudelaire and Rimbaud. A particular focus of Poembeat's work is on the voices of American writers including Tennessee Williams, Langston Hughes, Robert Pack, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, and Patti Smith. 

In live performances, Poembeat Live operates as a duo featuring Alexander Moeckl (guitar) and Gerald Fiebig (samples and electronics), with the stripped-down line-up enhancing the intimate atmosphere of the poetry readings.

In addition to his work with Poembeat, Alexander Moeckl masterminds The Leadbelly Project, a quartet dedicated to creating a contemporary sound for Leadbelly's blues classics, songs which, according to leading German blues critic Karl Leitner "have hardly ever been interpreted in a greater manner than by The Leadbelly Project. What a band! Absolutely outstanding!" Poembeat live sideman Gerald Fiebig is also an award-winning poet and sound artist with a number of commissions from major international broadcasters and artist institutions as well as book and CD releases to his credit.
