Influences: I’ve been greatly influenced by local music festivals and the YouTube rabbit hole :) A transformative moment for me was seeing Octo Octa tear up the decks at Piknic Electronik in 2019. I felt like I had tapped into something... like a musical collective consciousness - the rhythms were just so familiar and grounding. Since then, I’ve been incredibly drawn to the 90s and their irreplicable energy  as well as to some more recent house producers. I think the real influence though is just the sounds and the way they move me.
 
Affiliations/Residencies/Projects: Just doing my own thing at the moment, but working on some projects that I hope to share soon!

Samhain XX was an experiment in streaming during an incredibly dark and uncertain time. The idea was since we couldn't get together physically, we could get our whole community together on a stream in a totally immersive environment that allowed for things that wouldn’t be possible to happen in the normal material state of events. To make it unique to its medium, and to therefore look beyond boundaries and travel distance and normal event times and all the other things that limit the possibilities in the real world. This allowed us to put together an over 30 hour dream line up with so many inspirations and heroes. Impossible things like having people from all over the world in a single stream, like Wata Igarashi from Japan, or Azu Tiwaline from the Sahara by way of France, or Solar from SF, or Eris Drew from deep in the T4T LUV NRG woods, Danny Daze in Miami or Clark Price in Pittsburgh and so on. So we were more than ecstatic that one of our favorite producers who happens to reside in London agreed to participate: Forest Drive West. His music is stellar and moves in so many directions, it is truly an honor to have his set close our weekly releases / rebroadcasts of the Samhain XX series. We can only hope these experiments will help us mutate to a more interesting future.

Arriving as something of a poster boy for the so called outsider house scene that emerged in 2013, Huerco S is Kansas born, Brooklyn based artist Brian Leeds. His sound is resolutely lo-fi, scuffed up and knackered, as proven by his Colonial Patterns LP on the Software label, which is a modern classic. Further EPs on Future Times and Antony Naples’s Proibito label have found him distilling his cerebral and atmospheric sounds yet further, with occult moods and foggy grooves encouraging listens to sink deep into his abstract but inviting worlds. 

As a DJ he is no more of a hurry to make an impact. This podcast he has put together is thoroughly absorbing from the off, with cavernous chambers of implicit rhythm, iridescent pads and loosely scattered hits slowly transforming into something resembling a groove. Later in the two-hours long recording, the mix serves proper house tunes with which Huerco S. proves to have a keen eye for the dance floor too.

Introduce yourself... Where you live currently? Hometown? One fun fact about yourself? 

I'm Naemi, I'm from Wichita, Kansas, but now I live in berlin. I won World's Worst DJ 2015 (https://hearthis.at/worstmix/worst-mix-2015-entry-2/)

Earliest musical influence?

My parents are really into motown and a lot of other 60s pop soul like The Temptations, "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" was my favorite track until I discovered Linkin Park lol

But also my 5th grade teacher had the CD of The Room by Harold Budd that she would play while we worked on assignments, that was pretty pivotal.

Describe one of your first DJ gigs in detail:

When I was 16, a group of my friends would organize these parties and we did one at my friends' house venue in Wichita. I'm like 90% it was first time I'd DJed at a party. There were like too many people in the house and while I was playing a Wolfgang Gartner remix of 3 by Britney Spears the floor started to bend and sink in a bit from people jumping and we had to move most people out of the room lmaoo

What do you wish to see in the future for the dance music community?

I'd like to see less queers willfully enabling corporate pinkwashing efforts with no inkling of subversion, as well as more self-reflexivity and consideration on the part of promoters + event organizers. Beyond that, I'd like to hear a broader spectrum of voices/minds/musics being heard with more consistency. Also, more risks being taken with regards to content + context, and more challenges for the audience.

Paint a picture of your third best dance move:

When I've really been going at it for awhile and I wanna just exhaust myself more, I do this hop in a square with my arms flailing, kinda in an X formation.
