Fresh from playing CMJ, Adrian Galvin and Luca Buccellati are @Yellerkin, the handsome twosome currently winning over much of the industry (and the world) with their new single, Tools. Having just dropped the track's trippy visuals, the NY band have clearly been having late night adventures in the woods involving a touch of grave digging and plenty of Pranayama breath yoga/shamanic dance routine. Produced in their Bushwick bedrooms, Tools is a real genre hybrid, with a contagious energy pulsating as the boys reflect on the state of our generation. Stepping up to rework the track is Chicago’s @louisthechild, the preferred remixer of Bombay Bicycle Club. Slowing the tempo but upping our urge to dance, those killer steel pans will having you bouncing through your day with a smile on your face. Pretend it’s still summer, hit play, dance.

The Formation

The piece launches with rapid, punchy bass and dry percussive strikes. The tight, minimal sound mirrors the lyric’s opening: eyes lost in the past, searching in the dark. There is no lush reverb — only bare sound, as if the listener too is caught in the raw edges of perception.

As the verse deepens, folk-inspired guitar phrases weave into the pattern. These fluid, cyclic motifs echo the arising and fading of forms (මැවෙන මැවෙන රූ, විඳින විඳින ඇස්), suggesting how the senses continuously construct fleeting images, like mirages among peacocks. The shifting rhythmic cycles destabilize a fixed sense of ground — embodying impermanence.

Midway, the track bursts into a binaural Slow celebratory percussion drop. Here, the stereo field expands, the sound becomes immersive and psychedelic. This section mirrors the lyrical self-questioning — “How can that eye ever be mine? If it is mine, it is not yours…” — a celebration of paradox, where distinctions blur. The binaural resonance places the listener inside the question, dissolving boundaries of “self” and “other.”

Finally, the music contracts again, moving from intensity into stillness. The layers peel away, leaving a contemplative sonic space that parallels the lyric: “The self I once claimed, now seen, dissolves away.”

The Connection to Dhamma

The structure itself reflects the path of insight:

Dark, dry bass/percussion = avijjā (ignorance, blindness).

Folk guitar cycles = saṅkhāra (formations), ceaselessly arising and passing.

Binaural drop = the expansion of awareness, yathābhūta ñāṇa dassana (seeing as it is).

Final dissolution into stillness = nirodha (cessation, release).

The music does not simply accompany the lyrics; it enacts them. The sonic journey mirrors the listener’s own mind: clinging to forms, questioning identity, then dissolving into the silence where no “I” remains.

This is not just a futuristic folk rap — it is a field of practice. To listen is to observe how rhythm and self both arise, shimmer, and vanish.
