Robert Charlebois’ musical world is an incredible source of treasures, in several genres, throughout the course of a career that has reached the half-century mark. Any good vinyl hunter on the planet knows the value and importance of Charlebois. His name is circulating among record collectors, and his music jumps from generation to generation, country to country, in the most natural way. Let us state the obvious: the raw energy found in his music has not been altered in the slightest by the passage of time.

Music lovers under 40 have discovered Charlebois by going through their parents’ vinyl collections. Used LPs, scratched and dusty, holding true gems that begged to come out and play. Back then, Charlebois was bringing a new sound to Quebec, an evolution, but he also introduced a look, an influential style.

Until now, Robert Charlebois’ oeuvre had never been the subject of a rereading/remixing project. This year, his 50th anniversary in show business, provided a good opportunity to invite a new generation of musicians to dig deeper into the grooves Charlebois has laid down. Though the techniques and instruments used to write and treat music have changed, the goal remains the same: to surprise, to develop new ideas, to push back the limits of form and content, to broaden the sound spectrum.

The idea of a remix album came from Montreal-based musician/producer/artistic director/DJ Poirier. The project eventually got set in motion, and Poirier took its helm as artistic director and executive producer. He also applied his magic to a handful of tracks. The concept was to sample Charlebois’ songs directly, without access to their individual tracks – to draw from the raw material and go straight to the heart of the matter. The results: fat dirty funk, round beats, and psychedelic flights seen under a new light. The sunnier side of Charlebois’ music is also represented along the way through nods to Latin, reggae, and calypso music.

In November 2013 Poirier was invited by the Reggae Rajahs (big up!) to play in India for the first time. One night, after the gig at the NH7 Weekender, The Heatwave, Rubi Dan and Poirier were chilling at the hotel playing and swapping music. That's when the Wha-La-La-Leng Riddim caught Rubi Dan ears. A few weeks later, Rubi Dan recorded the vocal in London and Poirier finished the track in Montreal.

"Fresh for 2016 comes a brand new 7" from Montreal based producer Poirier. Taken from his forthcoming album "Migration", "Jump" is his take on the classic dancehall sound of the 90s and features a bonafide legend from that era, NYC's very own Red Fox. Montreal's own ambassador of international bass and tropical riddims Poirier delivers his latest EP, a free offering available on his website for download. The newest gem from the deep Poirier catalogue is an exploration in the riddim tradition in its purest form, presenting the listener with an infectous beat designed for dancefloors across the globe. Over this instrumental backdrop, Poirier invites MCs and vocalists from the four corners of the planet, producing a worldwide palette of different styles and languages in one short musical adventure.

Mr. OK, a recent Montreal resident and Port-au-Prince native, kicks off the celebrations and represents for Haïti with his unique Créole flow, leaving his mark all over "Jokma." He is followed by Boogat and Madhi, spicing up the riddim with an undeniable latino flavor on "Siempre Mas Pesa'o," just as memorable as Poirier and Boogat's 2010 latino anthem "Que Viva". Next up is Kween G, a Ugandan MC living in Australia who recorded her session in Kampala in the midst of constant power outages only to mark one of the EP's highlights. Set&Match, a collective from Montpellier, France are part of a new wave of lyricism in the french scene and show off their gusto by goofing around on the beat with their distinct non-chalant raps. Lastly, L'Xtrmst.Zen, a veteran of the Montreal rap scene, represents Canada with a twist by rapping in Créole, showcasing the EP's essence with a perfect closer.

"The basic idea behind Kidnap Riddim was to create a heavy, hypnotic and minimal beat that could stand side by side in the club with records by the likes of Lil Wayne, Drake or Rick Ross without losing any rush," explains the globe-trotting producer. "Then, to emulate a classic practice in the world of dancehall- where it's common to record various vocalists over the same riddim- and apply it to hip hop, where this approach is less common" taking Poirier further into his musical explorations. "Kidnap Riddim is a collection of languages and accents. It showcases a worlwide roster, all four continents are represented."
