This track is the result of me trying out 2-5-1 chord progression. The amount of instruments is small: Piano, flute, guitar, bass and drums. The way this is mixed tries to mimic old analog sound lacking digital precision. The sound is soft and round for this reason, but the instruments are mixed aggressively to give edge and old feel.

Inspired by the music of Tangerine Dream. 80s feel. Pretty simple structurally.

Harpeggiator

In 2015 I build a Jecklin Disk microphone system. As microphones I used very cheap electret microphone capsules. This recording was made on my balcony, June 2016 using the Jecklin Disk and Olympus LS-5 recorder. Jecklin Disk produces a very binaural recording so headphones are recommended for best effect, which can be quite lifelike.

Most recordings are produced for loudspeakers. Both ears hear the sound from all loudspeakers, but with headphones this is not the case without signal crossfeed. This short demo illustrates the effect of crossfeed and how it can enhance headphone listening experience.

I tried to create a stereo image that works with loudspeakers and headphones without crossfeed. I wrote some Nyquist-plugins to control the stereo image. The track contains relatively simple structures, but works pretty well in my opinion.

Apples And Oranges

Learning spatiality and other stuff. Project had promising start. End result is messy. Too many tracks? Works pretty well with headphones without crossfeed and with loudspeakers. Dynamic Range DR13.

Learning Curve

In this track I practiced mixing and also spatiality and other effects. It took me a long time to fine-tune the tracks, shape the spectrum and spatiality so that everything can be heard. Structurally and harmonically this track is not good, but I think I learned a lot. Stylistically the track is versatile and perhaps too wild, but that's the music I make. Nobody has to like it. * About channel difference index:
M = abs(left channel + right channel)
S = abs(left channel - right channel)
Channel difference index varies between 0 (monophonic) and 1 (channels identical but out of phase). For natural spatiality with headphones channel difference index at lowest frequencies should be 0.1-0.15 and increase with frequency so that it reaches values 0.4-0.5 around 800 Hz. Most music is mixed primarily for speakers and have larger than optimal channel difference index meaning headphone cross-feed is needed to limit channel difference to natural levels.

Climate Change

Recently my understanding of music theory has increased thanks to awesome You-tubers such as Signals Music Studio and Hack Music Theory. This is my first track with a chord progression that makes sense. Phrygian Dominant mode is used, hence the name. Mixing this track was somehow very difficult. Dynamic range: DR11

Phrygian Dominance

Playing with modes from Locrian to Lydian. That's why the mood chances so fast and often. Dynamic range DR11. Tempo 117 BPM. Crossfeed with headphones not recommended, because the track is mixed so that crossfeed should not be needed to reduce excessive channel separation. The low frequencies are pretty much mono and the channel separation increaces with frequency.

Ecclesiastical Secularism

This was supposed to be a track that is finished in 2 months, but it took a year to finish! Mainly a composing practise. The mixing isn't that perfect. I want to move on...

Yin Yang

I'm an acoustics engineer interested of spatial effects in headphone listening such as spatial distortion due to too large stereo separation. I try to enlighten people about unnatural aspects of spatial distortion and how it degrades the enjoyment on headphone listening without proper crossfeeding.
