Poker Flat Recordings has long held a talismanic role within the house and techno underground –responsible for countless classic moments and pursuing a vision that propels the scene ever forward. Here, Dutch DJ and producer Wouter de Moor continues this rich tradition, dropping an essential release for Steve Bug’s ever-important imprint. 

The Lectures E.P features the words and wisdom of the ultimate DJ’s DJ and king of the underground – Theo Parrish. Wouter de Moor’s original mix intertwines a driving house groove and insistent synth riff around Mr Parrish waxing lyrical about the art of DJing, producing and life in general. 

The vocal track is also provided as an accapella for DJ’s looking to spice up their own sets or productions, while a pair of remixes come courtesy of scene stalwart Kirk Degiorgio. The Brit delivers a vocal and dub that hit hard- toughening up the groove and taking the track further in the realm of late night main room vibes. 

The EP is rounded off with 8 Voice- a knowing nod to the old school with firing percussion, tight snares and a filthy warehouse-ready bassline.

Wouter de Moor - Lectures feat. Theo Parrish Words (Accapella)

Crustation were a short-lived trip-hop group with ties to Portishead and Massive Attack; their 1997 single "Flame" was a perfectly nice, totally innocuous, and mostly forgettable contribution to the drowsy downbeat catalog. The journeymen producers Mood II Swing put their characteristically light, funky touch on a club-friendly remix of the song, as they did hundreds of times during their run as New York's most dependable remixers. But Mood II Swing also had a murkier, more abstracted side; you can hear it in productions like "Move Me," "The Slippery Track," and the eerie "Inhale," which sounds like Gary Numan's "Cars" being sucked through a Teflon wormhole. But they outdid themselves on the "Borderline Insanity Dub" of "Flame," lacing a skipping, proto-U.K.-garage beat with hiccupping vocal loops and a lithe, shadowboxing bass line; the icing on the cake comes courtesy of a swirling fog of vocal harmonies that pans from speaker to speaker. Running out of phase with the beat, it lends a sense of tidal ebb-and-flow, throwing the time deliriously out of joint. The fact that Mood II Swing never produced anything else quite like it only makes this fluid, enveloping tune all the more irreplaceable. P.S.

Longtime collaborator DAVE DK is a masterful producer and remixer that appears regularly on Pampa and Kompakt. His take on 'The Solution' feels like a road trip to paradise and back. Montreal's PRIORI is one of the hottest names in showbiz right now. His ability to bridge genres and create pristine sound designs is fully on display in his remix for 'The Solution'. Last but not least, the legend that is SEBASTIAN MULLAERT took a moment off from his revered Circle Of Live jams to transform the albums deepest cut 'Ardor' into an extraordinary musical journey. "You Make Me Feel" was the first outtake from Steve Bug's second Poker Flat album "Sensual". Slowly but unmistakebly building up a hypnotic groove with a rolling percussion loop, ice-cold snare and hollering vocal (reminiscent of Gainsbourg's "Bonny and Clyde"), Bug forces you flashing your sharpest dancing routines even before he throws in that distorted, take-no-prisoners, Saunderson-style organ-bassline. Flip over for another version that's served up straightened-out and stripped down yet still manages to come up with a higher percentage of FUNK. Another totally satisfying five star menu for the Poker Flat gourmet.
