Marcus LaRail Jones, known to the music world as “Pokey Pimppadon,” is far from a stranger to rap music, the streets, or small town southern life. Born in West Point, MS, Pokey comes from the bottom of the map. Raised by a single mother in the grimy projects of Jim James Court, staying alive was an everyday challenge, a challenge that Pokey managed to survive through his love of southern rap music. He jumped on the music scene at the early age of 13 writing, freestyling, and smashing rap battles. Rapping has been the one thing he has used to deal with the obstacles and challenges he has faced. It has allowed him to express some of the things he has experienced. Now, he is ready to further educate listeners on a new sound that will surely take rap fans by storm.
He became a member of the group, Ruff Draft Thugs under Currency Flow Records at the age of 15. Ruff Draft Thugs was a family affair that consisted of his cousins Shunn Bennett the Gangsta, (Shunn Bennett) D.C. the Legendary Pimp (Darius Calvert), and childhood friend Playa D (Derrick Hall) and Pokey Pimppadon. DJ Paul and Juicy J of Three Six Mafia produced Ruff Draft Thugs’ first cassette tape in 1996. Two of the hit songs were Constantly Thinking (Gangsta walk) and Steady Smoking. He was also featured on the Tommy Wright III album, ``Feel Me Before They Kill Me'' on the hit track “Act a fool” in 1998. As a member of the group Ruff Draft Thugs, Pokey experienced major success on the local scene and underground circuits in the Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana, and Tennessee areas appearing in the July issue of Murder Dog magazine in the late 1990’s. The group has opened for Three Six Mafia, D.J. Jelly, Sammy Sam the hit man, Juvenile, BG, Lil John and the East Side Boyz, and other well-known southern artists. The group’s compilation album, which featured Playa Fly and K-Roc of Phophet Posse, included earlier hits such as, “To Dis,” and “Pimp a Duck ''. Pokey Pimppadon also wrote other hits such as, “Big Chevy'' and “In da Winter.” He has also done major ghost writing for local artists, but will not reveal their name. From major street buzz, local radio stations were convinced to air those hits.
With over 15 years in the underground industry, Pokey has already made a name for himself on the local scene and created a local fan base by performing live shows at local clubs and colleges. He has been featured on music with Shunn Bennett the Gangsta, Big Bull, Gamebred, NPV, Bennie Point, Yung Sipp, Big E and plenty more talented underground artists. More than just another rapper, Pokey is a hip hop artist with a vision. He sees beyond the music booth and has used his entrepreneurial spirit to launch Overweighted Entertainment. It is a record label that stands behind its motto that “Dope Musik Sells itself.” You can expect good quality street music that is like dope to the ears of music loving addicts. With many talented artists also working on their debut, Overweighted Ent. is sure to be a label that will inspire others with similar stories and backgrounds as Pokey Pimppadon. He wants to use his street education and passion for the industry to follow in the footsteps of CEOS like Russell Simmons, Jay-Z, Birdman, and Master P.
Pokey’s first solo mixtape, “Driving Miss Daisy,” showcased his authentic street sound and hard-hitting beats. Whether discussing relationships, the streets, money, drugs, it is how Pokey breaks down aspects of the game that makes “Driving Miss Daisy” such a powerful concoction. He is not hiding anything on that album, and he also added that he is not holding back anything on this one either; he is giving hip hop lovers the truth. Pokey has a hold on rap music and rap music has a hold on him.
Pokey admires early artists who appreciated the game, had skills, and did not glorify or describe materialistic things of the game such as A Town Hard boys,Top Authority, Dayton Family, Tupac, Scarface, Big Mike, Ghetto Boys, UGK, Outkast, 8Ball&MJG.
