I prefer to record fresh sounds and each time it takes time, of course, there is a library of stock sounds that get used and reused constantly, even in major blockbuster movies. Alternatively, I record the sound by myself, but there are many variables to consider. The highest quality recording is done by a DAT (Digital Audio Tape) recorder with all other devices producing at least some distortions in the sound.
In music, an atmosphere can mean many things. Creating an atmosphere can also be about dealing with positive and negative spaces. That is, how you fill out the sound, or leave open spaces within it.
To create this sort of sound, it’s perhaps helpful to throw percussion right out the window. What rhythm remains is sparse and minimal, and set to an incredibly low tempo.
