Born in deep rural Poland, Polanski's music draws inspiration from the organic sounds of nature conveyed in the form of musical language of our digital era. His style is known to be eclectic and indeed his DJ approach is sensitive to particular venues and club nights. Never bound to one musical style, whether as DJ, remixer or solo producer, Polanski tries to bridge the gap between rhythmic grooves and the more experimental styles of dance music.

Unique as a performer, he always takes his audience on a personal journey - a sonic walk in the forest so to speak. It is the emotional drive more than the musical genres themselves that seals the journey together. Constantly shifting his sound, Polanski has evolved over the last 20 years as a DJ. His ever-developing style and production techniques have given a new dimension to his sound.

Promoter and resident DJ of two London-based events; BLANC his solo project and Volt which he co-runs with Antonio de Angelis. With the rapid growth of the latter he reaffirmed his status as a selector, sharing the stage with some of the biggest names in the industry, while at BLANC he continues to invite lesser-known artists’ and supports the local and the international up-and-coming talent.

As part of House of Reptile, not only he debuted his trademark sound with a first solo EP, but as well as Artist & Repertoire chief he oversees the roster of all the future releases.

This mix is originally recorded to accompany “Physical Distancing” exhibition curated by Parma Ham and held at London’s legendary Electrowerkz.

Curse 011 - Polanski

Forming a full cycle, Polanski returns to the Instinct Series with a dance floor-ready yet an introspective selection of works. Each of the three tracks were built for an extended period of time, between 2022/23 in his London studio. The final product weaves-in a mixture of raw modular sound-bites coupled with pulsating rhythms. The extensive use of field recordings form heavy atmospheres that are often accompanied by his own voice, sound objects and underlying drones. On occasions the fluctuating sounds have outbursts of sonic tantrums, activating a cerebral response. A state where rhythms are not obliged to strictly follow the tracks and transients are bent without any rules. I am attempting to build a fictional character for my soundscape production piece. I have created an abstract narrative sound piece, a fictional story. I see this as a soundtrack to a non-existing film, an extract from it. You would be able to imagine, through the sonic layers presented in a first person’s narrative, a day in a life, an extract from it.

Concept:

 “My pen, accustomed to figures, is powerless to create the music of assonance and rhyme. I shall attempt nothing more than to note down what I see (…)”

This 1920’s masterpiece describes life in the regimented society, ruled over by the Benefactor. It is a dystopian vision detailing the fate of a humanity surrendered to a collective dream of technology. Loosely based on the book itself, as well as on art pieces that resonate with that, era I am attempting to create a sonic narrative to my fictional character.

Place: somewhere, not here, nor there.
Time: timeless, not now, nor then
Political system: totalitarian, ruled by the Liberator. 

My character doesn’t have a name; in fact in this fictional world nobody has one. People only exist as units. In a perfectly mathematical world the only name under which one operates is a number given at birth. Let us call him S-1979. 

He is neither happy nor sad. He exists. He doesn’t understand the concept of freedom. He works for SonoSystems.  SonoSystems owns everything, every piece of land and every object built on it. S-1979 works in an office above a printing press.  Although he is a very talented writer, he only uses his skills to record the daily life of Liberator for a State Gazette. Freethinking and art don’t exist. In fact it is considered a barbaric thing of past generations.

Every day, every little moment of S-1979’s life is controlled by a set of rules. He gets up every morning at the same hour: toilet, shower, breakfast, then …off to work. He can walk to his office, but walking is only encouraged during the Leisure Hour. He instead uses public transport. Arriving in the office, he swipes his log-in card, all of it talking place against the backdrop of a ticking clock. With a mathematical perfection everything is conducted in time with a bell of a clock.

There is a time and place for everything in his life: Personal Hour, Social Hour. He even gets his friend assigned to him, as well as the female unit (A-0101), with whom he makes love during the Happy Hour. It’s all detailed in the Table of Hours.
Everything is transparent; the buildings, the vehicles, the Globe that conceals the entire infrastructure, as well as all of the living forms within it. Even one’s thoughts are transparent, but…

Creativity doesn’t strive in idleness. Creative people ‘like' to be pushed and challenged. This push and pull of life occurrences is giving us the spark to create. But how do you do this in such stillness? For me, it was very important to put ego aside and challenge my processes. It would be an immediate response to sink into the darkness, whether on an emotional level or as an outcome of the creative work. But for once, I needed to overturn the situation with something positive.

Couple of weeks ago I captured sounds of people applauding the NHS workers from my balcony. It was a cacophony of sounds; cheers, bangs, claps and general human noise beautifully united for the moment. There is a lot to say what this actually mean or does to the modern-day martyr alas "The Hero", but if we remove the Tory supporters from the picture we get a great unifying experience. Showing gratitude to the people who stand on behalf of millions fighting the fight with an invisible - "The Other".

The following days I've spent turning this field recording into a song and here I present you with an outcome. I tried to somehow replicate the heightened heartbeat pulse in the leading drum pattern and some of the noises are meant to give a sense of respiratory functions. Creating it was a sort of cathartic experience and I felt the pain, grief as well as compassion. If you focus enough you will perhaps see the many underlining emotions within it. For me the conclusion of the track is that we can overcome anything if we are working in unison. ...as the subtitle suggest “We Stand Together”.

I am unable to contribute much to the NHS at this point, but the very least I can do is to dedicate this work to all those who are fighting at the frontline of this global calamity. There are 200 free downloads available, but if you can spare few £'s please donate to the charity, which is organising the PPE supply to the NHS. At this point I chose to use this fundraiser: www.crowdfunder.co.uk/masks4nhsheroes (suggested minimum donation is £2) but as it is near its completion I will eventually change it to another, with a similar objective.

The Brvtalist is pleased to premiere two tracks from Angel Attack’s upcoming release, Dance dance otherwise we are lost. The EP also launches the new label House of Reptile. Hailing from Peckham - London, the independent label seeks to unearth and introduce new artists to each other, instigate true collaboration, sharpen the artistic instinct and ultimately expand their vision to all four corners of the Earth. The first year will will see 4 EPs focused on the collaboration between London and European friends with the rising talents in South America. 

Dance dance… gets the label off to a strong start with 5 diverse yet nicely linked tracks which range from the hard hitting peak time techno of “TransTanzTheater” to London multi-faceted artist Polanski’s sultry, hypnotic “Is This Happiness?” remix of “Orbits of Happiness”.  Filmmaker, one of Colombia’s most exciting names, also lends his production prowess on his mind-bending “The Quandry Remix” of “Incessant Maze”.

Fundamental order of all the things, such as matter. A particle —-
essentially everything that existed, exists and will exist. Also the void, home of nothing.

Because to be, to evolve or to exist in unpolluted way; equipped with a DNA-narrative, from a pre-mutated space dust particle, the seed of all existence, the mega-source —- The Universe. Form and matter architect, total collector of energies, the reason for life and decay.

'Harmony in Chaos' in infinitum and always in tandem. The two mega-forces working on par. Without any hate but not in love. Their parasitic symbiosis is neither an ebb nor a flow. The existence of dust particles in space and time —- mutating, evolving.

It is of an utter importance to once again tune in and observe the nature which radiates from within us. From the very fabric of our close surroundings, and from afar, far beyond the abyss ~

His style is known to be eclectic and indeed his DJ approach is sensitive to particular venues and club nights. The name derives from the Old East Slavic word поле, which means "field" or "plain". The Polans were a Slavic tribe who gave a foundation to forming Poland around 8th century.

Unique as a performer, he always takes his audience on a personal journey - a sonical walk in the forest so to speak. It is the emotional drive more than the musical genres themselves that seals the journey together. 
Constantly shifting his sound, Polanski has evolved over the last 20 years as a DJ. His ever-developing style and production techniques have given a new dimension to his sound. 

2013 saw the birth of 🇧​🇱​🇦​🇳​🇨​ - a forward-thinking electronic dance night, it redefines the format of clubbing by stripping down elements of a show, concentrating on situating the DJ on the dance floor. The music and the audience take control of the room.

Currently hosted at Electrowerkz, the night has created a perfect platform to showcase up-and-coming local and international talent, as well as Polanski himself, often road-testing his own music and experimenting with new DJing techniques.
