What does dancing mean to you?

" I really enjoy (and miss) hanging out and going to clubs, however, I am not really a dancer myself so I don’t think I am the best person to answer this one. It might sound a bit geeky but I tend to find joy listening and immersing myself in the loud sounds and deep frequencies of the club. Having said that, dancing it’s a really intimate thing for me, I might seldomly do it but at home only. "

Alec Pace has been steadily paving his way with a plethora of varied releases on the likes of All Centre and his own Early Reflex, that tap into very complex electronic soundscapes full of raw energy. With a classical music background and a long time in punk bands, when he was younger, you can sense that blend of studied precision and no rules attitude in all his production and mixes. His mix for us delivers a neo-futuristic club environment full of organised chaos that one can't help but let loose too.

Zambian artist Wamya Tembo, who goes under 'SHE Spells Doom' has had a vast number of release's worldwide via labels such as NEVER DECAY, Monstart, and All Centre. All of which highlight his taste for eclectic range of soundscapes, that transpire into a range of energetic sets that have you dancing from beginning to end. It’s safe to say we are excited to have him join our mix series and it’s not one to disappoint…

Next up in our Origins Tapes series is Zambian Artist Wamya Tembo, who rocketed onto the electronic scene with his musical moniker 'SHE Spells Doom' in 2014 and has been a mainstay ever since. 

SHE Spells Doom's sound holds a plethora of influence: everything from Congolese Rhumba and early 00s Rap to strong House and Techno influences can be heard in their sound. They create music that is often interlaced with a deep love of 80s sci-fi and horror movies, which brings a deeper and darker edge to both their club and experimental cuts. 

SHE Spells Doom's release's span worldwide via labels such as NEVER DECAY, Monstart, and NY’s Créme Records: His electric sets and recorded mixes will have you breaking a sweat from either dancing beginning to the end or getting chills from his electrifying sound design.

With all that being said, we are excited to have SHE Spells Doom join us for Tapes #16 and we firmly believe that 2021 is going to be his best yet..

Very excited to welcome @aliciasteanson to the mix series. This ones been on the cards for a hot minute and it does not disappoint! Alicia is a producer & musician making deeply rhythmic, off-kilter dance music inspired by a love of club culture and the avante-garde. Residing in London, she cut her teeth working at Phonica and studying contemporary music, a combination that has seen her develop a passion for obscure and unusual soundscapes.  

Her sonic vision was realised recently on her mesmerising latest work  ‘Archangelic Collapse’ which dropped as part of the ‘In Clusters’ compilation on Mor Elian’s Fever AM no less. Five minutes of oblique sound design that we’ve come to expect from her radio mixes, readjusted for the dark corners of the club.

We're in love with Tomu DJ's regular Bandcamp transmissions (and features for Juke Bounce Werk and Unearthed Sounds). It is work that reflects the mutability of life, and veers from adventurous ambient to ruff club-not-club excursions. We invited the American producer to take over the show, and she came back to us with a two hour showcase of some of her favourite and most influential music. While her mixes often feature chaotic blends, this mix in particular gives room for each track to shine. She hopes to create a cohesive mixtape flow despite choosing highly variable tracks from different genres.

Dancing, for me, is primitive escapism at its finest. The raw reaction to move your body along to a rhythm, combined with the unified energy of everyone else doing it around you totally elevates the experience and makes you connect with complete strangers in an amazing way. It’s a universal language that everyone can speak.

Coming out of Malmö, Sweden Bolam has been churning out an exciting array of productions in recent years. From slamming slices of breaks-infused electro to bass-driven club edits he has built a varied-yet-focused collection of tracks, releasing on various labels such as Lobster Theramin and Hâws alongside highly regarded vinyl releases on Space Dust, a newly launched sub-label of Alien Communications. Fo his POLAR mix he has delivered a clean blend showcasing his current taste working through an hour of rolling-house and minimal tracks, then onto a burst of broken energy pumped into modern club bangers.

As part of the Kindred store/radio crew, the young London-based art student, Jake Walker has been pushing himself through various circles to be one of the capitols' most exciting selectors. With an acquired taste for the soundscapes accustomed to those early morning hour sessions, Jake delivers a mix for a dancefloor that is ready for the music to start getting weird and wonderful. Starting with the type of sound you'd expect at an after-hours forest knees-up, and it ends with what you'd dream of in a dark sweaty warehouse.
