Miajica’s groovy expedition into very different musical territories on his Second Spring EP is our favorite way to present the complexity and range of an artist’s output. An avid collector, digger and revivalist, he enjoys retelling forgotten stories and sometimes even dedicates his tracks to real people, as with Spanish balladeer El Fary on this EP.

As one third of Alma Negra, Miajica loves to explore long-lost world music and draw inspiration from it; this delightful compulsion is also very present on this EP, which is nothing less but a worthy collection of vibrant leftfield dance hits in all shapes and sizes. From the playful, dreamy Panflutes to the soulful Around & Around to the acid rawness of Manana Sera El Dia or Decidete, there’s melodic intricacy and organic functionality in every track, as well as a glaring little tribute.

Although the first or last three tracks could be an EP within themselves, we wouldn’t want to pigeonhole this prolific, eclectic artist into any genre or style – Miajica just makes music that is exceptional because he can and loves to.

【ブラザータイガー・バイオグラフィー】

元々は Monoteque という名前で2006年頃から活動していたオハイオ州はタレド出身の John Jagos (ジョン・ヤゴス)が、2009年から始めたソロ・プロジェクト。数年前よりBandcampで楽曲を発表し続け、自主リリースのEP「Vision Tunnels」に収録された代表作“Lovers” (2010)がヒットとなり、Washed Out, Toro Y Moi,  Neon Indian,  Small Black, Memory Tapes, Blackbird Blackbird, Teen Dazeと並びチルウェイヴ /グロファイの初期よりシーンの代表アーティスとして注目を浴びる(ウィキペデイアにも記載)。今年に入ってからは同郷のレーベル[Collective Crowd Records]から初のフィジカルとなる12”をリリース、TeclaやBlackbird Blackbirdのリミックス、最近ではアテネのインディ・シンセ・デュオKeep Shelly In Athensのリミックスも手がけるなど、  精力的な活動が目立つチルウェイヴ / シンセ・ポップの若手筆頭注目株。

In the spring of 2007, musician and producer Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy decided to launch his own label. Named after the house he grew up in, Claremont 56 would release beautiful music by friends, associates, collaborators and like-minded musicians.

In the 10 years that have passed since, Claremont 56 has more than surpassed Murphy’s modest expectations. It has built up a cult following around the world, with listeners responding positively to the label’s combination of magical music, beautiful artwork, and impeccable packaging.

To mark the label’s first decade, Murphy has put together a sumptuous vinyl box set of previously unheard material, produced and presented with the same attention to detail that listeners have come to expect.

Each copy of Claremont 56: 10 Years contains five weighty slabs of wax and a bespoke info sheet, housed in a specially designed, hand-numbered box with de-embossed logos on the front and rear. There is also a limited-edition run of 200 copies which come with an additional 12” containing exclusive remixes and a brand new Paqua track, ‘Dalas’.

However impressive the packaging, it’s the music that makes Claremont 56: 10 Years stand out. Featuring a mixture of unreleased tracks and brand new remixes of vintage label releases, the highlights come thick and fast.

As you’d expect, some of the most impressive contributions come from those artists you could describe as “legendary”, including Chicago deep house originators Larry Heard and Ron Trent. Can legend Holger Czukay kindly contributes one of the standout moments, the eccentric ‘Music To Be Murdered By’, from his own unreleased catalogue, while Afro-cosmic pioneer Daniele Baldelli joins forces with Marco Dionigi to deliver a typically spacey remix of Bison’s ‘Familiar Stranger’. There’s also an epic, Afro-tinged dub disco remix of Smith & Mudd’s ‘Nether’ by Norwegian scene founder Bjorn Torske.

Elsewhere, Good Timin’ man Jex Opolis turns an overlooked track by Paraiso into a samba-boogie killer, Sean P dubs out Zee Erf’s beautiful cover of ‘Southern Freeez’, and Phil Mison turns FreshRo’s laidback electrofunk cut ‘Pacific State’ into a breezy, Balearic gem. Look out too, for the emotion-rich beauty of Statues’ ‘River Darkness’ – a track arguably worth the cost of the box set on its own – and the deep space explorations of Almunia’s Leo Ceccanti.

We could go on, but we’re running out of space. Suffice to say, Claremont 56: 10 Years is a lovingly compiled, curated and presented celebration of the label’s first decade.

CITIZENS! met, tragically, at a house party. Lawrence was trying to chat up the host, Tom was there trying to impress a date. They both failed miserably. But Tom did walk in on Lawrence and Mike sitting, drunk, and, alone, listening to music. They foolishly decided to form a band. So, thanks to a couple of providential female rejections CITIZENS! came into existence.

They say there are a few things that they all agree on: 
‘We actually enjoy hanging out with each other.’ (Martyn)
‘Some of us are too mal-adjusted to be able to do anything else, and the rest of us are getting there fast.’ (Thom)
‘There are two things that really, really piss us off: REVIVALISM and UGLY POP. Bands only make two kinds of music these days: Pointless revivals of subcultures past, or ugly, inhumane cynical pop.’ (Tom)
 ‘Pop is not a dirty word. It’s a holy one.’ (Mike)
‘Death to Guetta’ (Lawrence)
They thought that a band needed to come along with the guts to make imaginative pop music, but to do it with soul and integrity, 
In order to be able to make this music they had to make what Tom calls ‘some stupid decisions.’ ‘Stupid,’ because it means Tom is still working as a kitchen porter, Lawrence is still making coffees and Martyn is still on the dole.
They signed to an indie label who ‘wouldn’t tell us what to do,’ recorded the album in a house, played the whole thing live, got drunk, fought over lyrics and didn’t edit out the mistakes.
The name is a call to arms, a statement, a mark in the sand.

‘It’s us against the world,’ Lawrence says, ‘we make our own rules and we take them very seriously. But it works because we don’t take ourselves seriously while we do it.’

They treated recording like a game, an experiment. They asked questions that other bands weren’t asking, and mixed elements they hadn’t heard mixed before. Most importantly they wouldn’t allow themselves to mimic any particular moment from decades past.
Instead of REVIVALISM, they stand for ECLECTICISM.
Tom says ‘We all live in London. It was supposed to be an impression of the different experiences of living in the city. That was the plan, but now its finished all the songs seem to be about sex. I wonder what that says about us?’
