Madloch’s Sound Avenue enters 2022’s second quarter by welcoming Jean Calliou back to the label for a new EP. First emerging in 2016, the Swiss artist quickly established himself with releases via Magician On Duty, RYNTH, Sag & Tre and Underyourskin Records, where his deep, melodious sound flourished. Moving forward, July of 2019 saw the Zurich resident make his Sound Avenue debut with a well-received remix of Joe Miller’s ‘The Days’. Deep and enchanting in equal measure, its organic vibe immediately won over DJs and fans alike, sparking what has been a fruitful relationship between the Belgian imprint and Swiss artist. Now on the strength of 2021’s ‘Departure Unknown’, Jean makes a welcome return to Sound Avenue with a sprawling five-track showcase entitled ‘Simplon’.

Beginning with the title selection, Jean furthers the sentiment that his compositions drift above the rest of existence. Whether it’s the hauntingly layered musical fragments or the sleek, meditative framework which houses his dusty percussive arrangements, there is a whimsical lean to his work that you just can’t ignore. The deliberate groove and haunting vocal phrases of ‘Down’ find Jean at his creative best. Perhaps less direct than some of his previous work, the end result is one of equal depth, where notes ring out in timeless suspension, resonating against a backdrop of colourful electronics. Meanwhile, ‘Feathered Serpent’ lightens the mood with its charismatic charm and laid back, yet youthful exuberance. Jean’s masterful coaxing of incandescent tones, soulful plucks and rolling organics fuels what is a charming eight-minute jaunt. 

Bypassing the collection’s halfway point are the slow burning vibes of ‘Hora’. Four minutes of glacial grooves and shape-shifting textures put the listener in a tranquil state, only to go further down the meditative rabbit hole as thoughtful vocal fragments and drone-like lines emerge for a suitably spaced-out finale. ‘Myst’ sits as the collection's most heartfelt composition and appropriately lands as its fifth and final selection. Wavy arps, fluttery sonics and creamy piano stabs unite for a reflective storyboard, one which invites you to surrender to its captivating power and ultimately puts a stamp on this resounding collection.

With previous support from some of the underground’s finest, including John Digweed, Nick Warren, Jamie Stevens, Animal Trainer, Gai Barone, and BBC’s Erol Alkan & Tom Ravenscroft, the innovative, psychology-inspired label & its experimental offshoot, Life Scripts, has seen consistent exceptional output in just a few years. For the Configurations series, that translates now to the 16th EP since its inception in October 2019.

juSt b again demonstrates her deep-thinking lyrical prowess with a new pair of well-crafted mindful narratives, this time themed around renowned Canadian Transactional Psychologist, Eric Berne, fused with Church’s signature rolling melodies. The first original, ‘Ego States’, begins by probing the depths of our most basic social interactions with the question ‘what’s really going on’ within the parent-adult-child dynamic & the often negative lifelong behaviours resulting from confusion & shifting of these roles.

James Welsh, a frequent studio partner & regular on the label, transforms the six minutes into a bold futuristic dance cut, boasting an acidy electro bass riff and sultry vox chop which adds a layer of warmth & moodiness to this edgy rework.

Next up, ‘Games People Play’ and its jabbing tribalesque kick/snare combo commence a more sinister portrayal of the various manipulative mind & power games we all play in our daily relationships. An eerie hypnotic synth line twists its way beyond the drop, creating a more nebulous atmosphere, perfect for the darkest of dingy dance floors.

Rounding out the 4-tracker, Berlin’s Vincenzo once again adds his classic soulful swing, giving the ominous original a lighter, playful bassline and airy daytime feel, while preserving juSt b’s vocal impact.

Configurations 16 represents another intellectual & provocative offering of standout productions from four high calibre artists.

We welcome Milkwish to the 4th volume of the "Modulism".
Born in the late 80s, Milkwish is one of the young generation's most talented DJs and house music producers. With his perseverance, ambition, and attention to detail, Milkwish keeps gaining more and more listeners all over the world. For several years he has been heard in the best clubs in Poland and at the biggest festivals. Milkwish performs also abroad, e.g. at Lio, an exclusive club in Ibiza, and his recordings are regularly supported by the world's leading DJs.
"Saint Trumpet," a recording that hit no. 1 on the Deutsche Dance Charts in Germany in 2012, was a real breakthrough for Milkwish. This achievement resulted in further ambitious projects and numerous collaborations with artists outside Poland.
His singles have been remixed by multiple top artists including Grammy winner Paul Harris (Dirty Vegas), Jamie Lewis – the owner of the famous Purple Music house brand, and a German super duo – Aka Aka. And it was just the beginning! He's released on such labels as Armada, LouLou Records, Jee Production, Nurvous, Tiger Records, and Nouveau Niveau. His recordings regularly appear in the bestseller lists of major online music stores such as Beatport and Traxsource, as well as Mayday, Pacha, Azuli, and many other foreign brands.
Milkwish was recorded with Ron Carroll, the result of which was released by the giant German label, Tiger Records, with the award-winning platinum band Sugarstarr and a house music star – Tom Novy. His latest single created with Tom Novy: "Jupiter" was not only played by DJs around the world but was also featured on BBC Radio 1.
Milkwish is also the author of a recording created especially for the New Look, a clothing brand, campaign. Along with DJ Miqro, his friend from Szczecin, Milkwish founded Randewu, a record label, whereas every Friday night you can listen to him play on Radio Szczecin Extra.
In the mix, he presented 11 of the most memorable Polyptych tracks.
