We were both really inspired by Disco music at the start of this project. Artists like the Bee Gees, Daft Punk and Tame Impala all had a big influence on us. Pariah was one of the first tracks we started working on for FKP and subsequently one for of the first ones we finished. The track is about being there to help someone through a hard time. But ultimately having to help yourself.

Pariah

This track was something we started as we were finishing off Pariah. Another track that’s more disco inspired. We liked the idea of a repetitive vocal theme that continued throughout the track. The production was inspired by artists such as The Weeknd, Air, Groove Armada and Daft Punk. The repetitive vocal hook with the music continuing to develop underneath really allowed us to build the story with the music  and production. We really wanted a lot of emotion in the production so the message didn't get stale. What results is a one of our favourite tracks on the release.

Your Side

Rostam we recorded up in Mona Vale by the ocean. It was very inspiring and played a big influence on the direction of this track. The guitar we recorded through the laptop speakers as we didn’t have access to all our equipment. With the right effects added it made for a really epic sounding lo-fi vibe that really drives the entire track from start to finish. We added our own influences around that. The beat walks the fine line between electronic production and more traditional rock beat. Another one of our favourite tracks from FKP

Rostam

Cherry is on the other end of the musical spectrum for this release. Big rock ballads were a big influence for us. The idea of being tempted and drawn back into old habits fit with the FKP theme. The track deals with temptation and the burden of being drawn back into something you're trying to escape from. Musically it takes the form a of a big rock ballad. Aerosmith, The Goo Goo Dolls and even tracks like L$D by A$AP Rocky influenced us a lot while we were working on Cherry

Cherry

We had a lot of musical ideas that didn’t necessarily fit the idea of tradition songs. For this release we decided to include a few as interludes. This one originally started out a little different with just the beat and some synths but ended up a little more developed into what you hear now. We wanted to convey a lot of emotion without lyrics and really let the music do the talking. This track was more inspired as a scene from a movie where things really take off. We decided early on to not let our influences just come from other artist but also from films and life in general. Music is just an expression of experiences.

जिंदगी (Interlude)

US is more inspired by our electronic influences. Artists like Four Tet, Burial and Boards of Canada. Vinay had made the beat that drives the whole track. Its really infectious and we could just listen to it alone for hours. That's the driving force behind the song. We added a lot of subtle melodic elements around the piano and vocal chops, more to hero the beat and keep the track grooving along. What came together was a really beautiful journey.

Another one of our favourite tracks on the release. This track is more inspired by Frank Ocean and in general the more modern style of singer songwriter. We essentially had 2 different tracks we produced for Munich. We had become so attached to both versions of this track we decided to just make them one with an interlude in the middle to bridge the two together as they were different tempos and styles. Our friend Oliver (Pesto) helped lay down some Trumpet at the end to really make for an epic conclusion to this track.

Munich

FKP deals with the themes of your past actions influencing your future. The idea of Karma and everything being intertwined was very intriguing to us. Everyone is on their own journey and can relate to this phenomenon in some way. We made this 9 song body of work as an eclectic mix of our influences to showcase our musical journey, both where it started and where its headed.

Future Karma Past (Intro)

Another rock inspired track from the release. The production came together really seamlessly for this one. We liked the filtered drums, arp and rock guitars all swelling to a crescendo with the lead vocal melody driving a more relaxed message. Its a nice juxtaposition of styles. This track really captures a beautiful mix of our influences. Both electronic and traditional rock styles blended together to create something unique. Similar to the overall theme of the release its our future and past combined to show who we are.

++FUTURE KARMA PAST

Polythought deliver forward thinking, and innovative electronic music experimenting with sound design, song structure and texture. Oliver Tank who has previously toured with James Blake, Lorde, Active Child and Lana Del Rey met Vinay Matta (Hansaa) in their home town of Sydney, Australia. Matta (who has also produced for rising US based artists such as GASHI and A.CHAL) and Tank instantly connected based on their similar tastes in music, organic instrumentation and progressive soundscapes. 
The pair’s varying talents match perfectly to create atmospheric, left of centre music with depth, introspection and emotion.
