Myriads (poem)

Touched by the spirit so benign
Of a young gent that sticks out in my mind
As one of my best friends in the big city
Known for heat, diverse food, and its freeways
Where him and I met over a decade back
With pursuits of doctors in pure math
Where we would meet from time to time
And write a lyric, critique a line
Of his contemporary prose
And my more classical approach
Where to this day his soul touches my heart
As I reminisce about what a man he’d become
While being a few younger than mine
And reaching such unattainable heights
Including the one beyond earthen skies
I learned a few day ago of this tragic occurrence
Of Dr. Kenan’s unforeseen disappearance
From grounds that cover the surface
As barriers between my life and his body
And leads me to question my own doings
What purpose they hold and how much their meaning
When I could have been that same broken soldier
Who perished at war unknown to the rest of this world
He was one of the kindest and strongest
He did have his intricate or unusual moments
But all I really care to pronounce
Is written word on his unceasing presence
In the lives and hearts of so many
Those like his Salt-lake colleagues and students
His friends of all genders and backgrounds
Including my own self who stands proud
Of what he remembers of young friend Kenan
And his willful spirit that shall linger on
If nothing more will ever be spoken
By this artistic and genius comrade
Then let us all be this moment solemn
Recalling the beautiful journey he walked through 
And then rise to his wishes for each of us
To love, learn, and live out abundant lives

Touched

I often reminisce
About the purpose of my being
About the legacy I leave
What could I leave the world with 

Will people smile when they hear 
The story of a Slavic-American man
Who carried a childlike spirit
And smiled despite his emotional demons

Will people even understand
His escapades down and within
Will they ever again hear of him
If there be no family continuum

Maybe God will remember me
But I struggle to believe
In the One who is said to select
Just the few who abide in Him

Maybe I’ll have kids one day
But I need a wife to help with this
And I’ve searched far and wide
To find myself as single still

Maybe I’ll come to have a heart
To love the world for what it has
But I can’t see myself being happy
With a dog for my closest companion 

And maybe this is the epic journey
To give thanks sincerely for just being 
To be okay when life isn’t easy
And thank something bigger for what’s in it

For the sights and the smells
For my kin and companions 
For each and every picture  
That helps me remember

So much glory within the span of one life
Of a woman who smiles now in our hearts
So amazing was she and her touch to this world
Of love, of caress, of an unceasing beauty

And no matter where and why she died
Be it today or another unforeseen time
There is no way to expect and accept
The passing of such a benevolent friend

As well as being my father’s dear mother
And such a big part upon my daily matters
Of a life that feels far less significant
Than hers that was longer but is gone now

No! I do not feel it and wonder
Why tears are only now coming out
From my own broken heart that can only aspire
To bequeath the love that she had for me

No! I do not even believe it
That life is such a lie if you think of
The way that you give it so much for so little
So many occurrences of intricate meaning

So many fights and battles within her
So many demons that she overcame and
So many people she touched so dearly
So much life that she now leaves the world with

So many Ukrainian footsteps taken
So much she did for that Slavik land and
So much energy my grandma created
From the touch and genius of a goddess

And nobody here really cares about her
Nor the rest of the world for that matter
Even I tread my journey just trying
To make it to the next chapter safely

But at least for a moment let me stop and be solemn
And thank and be grateful for the words she had told me
From the brilliance of teaching she carried and showed me
To the kindness of speaking and of the power of prayer

To be grateful to her for saving my soul from the devil
By teaching me there is more to life than these burdens
For that time we recited the Russian Lord’s prayer
And times now when I share her math tricks with my students

Thank you for showing me so many sights of sincerity
True love for our family and the whole world really
Thank you babushka for always believing
You were one goddess and to me always will be.
