This week's guest is hailing straight from the mythical Motor City and has been indisputably killing the game for the past 15 years thanks to his tasteful funk-infused house vibes. Pontchartrain & disco house music is a never-ending love affair and definitely embodies that undeniable "Detroit" feel with house and techno roots at its core. What sets him apart is his honest love and genuine understanding of music and what being a DJ really is; he effortlessly proves to be the antithesis of the guy who is bragging about or doing music for the wrong reasons. As the head of Whiskey Disco and Lovingdancing labels, no wonder he absolutely knows disco inside out more than anyone else and has been a key figure in enhancing the contemporary disco and funk revival. At the same time, he has released on over a dozen labels, including top ones like Delusions of Grandeur, Toy-Tonics or Soul-Clap Records. Some of his records even hit #1 chart positions on sites such as Juno. Today, he no longer has anything to prove and has already quite rightly been playing with the best house names out there: Javontte, Norm Talley, or Demuja.

This EP was a long time in the making. The last project completed at my Studio in Detroit before moving to NY a year ago with brother Javonntte - someone I love and respect endlessly. We laid everything down over the course of four days. We played drums together, we had homies in the studio getting down with us while ad libbing parts (you can even hear them in the background if you listen carefully). We ended up with a ton of content that I whittled down, arranged, mixed, edited, and mastered into this. The iconic Delano Smith filled in on remix duties for what was originally slated to be Mike Huckaby who had agreed to do this project just a month before his passing. Del did it justice. The stems were passed back, I mixed it down with extra moody flavor and we agreed it was perfect. I hope you all enjoy this as much as I did making it. I love you Huck and I love you Eric and I'm sorry you guys couldn't see the end result.

Detroit's https://soundcloud.com/pontchartrain takes the Razor-N-Tape reigns for his debut on the label - an all-cylinders-firing jazz laden, deep house EP with an exquisite https://soundcloud.com/demuja remix.

The A side kicks off with 'The Friends & Lovers Dub' version of the title track 'Love Is Madness', filled with deep pulsing pads, resonating dashes of sax, crisp percussion and a bumping bassline that provides the perfect backdrop to the echoing mantra of 'Friends... Lovers'. 

Next 'I-80' is a wonder of shimmering arps, brooding bass tones and reverberating trumpet touches. Perfect for the early hours, entrancing dancers as it washes over the airwaves. 

On the flip, Austria's golden boy Demuja hits hard with a Kerri Chandler channeling deep house remix of 'Love Is Madness', centred around a pumping bass synth, sustained organs and a classic marriage of horn stabs and emotive spoken word. 

Closing the EP the original mix is a sun kissed, eyes closed gem that blends delicate bongos, rousing sax lines and the sweet vocals of Simon Black & Leafar.

A must for any record collection out there, house head or not.

For the last 12 years, the way that Detroit-based DJ Pontchartrain has approached music, is centered around two things - learning and sharing. The result has been an interesting change up from the status quo of what comes out of the motor city. What started off as a project for edits and DJ tools has turned into a rediscovery of the roots of dance music. This shift in the last few years has pushed him into the new opportunities with some of the greatest labels in disco and house realm, and interesting achievements across the globe.

When it comes to performances, Pontchartrain believes in the overarching goal of community. From the time he brought the Detroit Children’s Choir on stage with him at Movement Festival to sing along, to the bold invocations of poetry and messages of love, the dancefloor is a place for everyone to come as they are, and enjoy the people they are with, centered around the ancient idea of the communal dance. 

It's at times like these, when we remind ourselves of what will come again, that we need people like Pontch to give us a little escape. tune in folks... Friday is here once more.

For the last 12 years, the way that Detroit-based DJ Pontchartrain has approached music, is centered around two things - learning and sharing. The result has been an interesting change up from the status quo of what comes out of the motor city. Heavily funk-infused and sample-laden original productions, edits and reworks that border on brand new versions of the track, and sets that string together a wide array of sounds that all center around the idea that dancing and feeling music are the main goals.
 
What started off as a project for edits and DJ tools has turned into a rediscovery of the roots of dance music. This shift in the last few years has pushed him into the new opportunities with some of the greatest labels in disco and house realm, and interesting achievements across the globe.
 
Currently he serves as A&R for one of the most prominent edits labels in the world, Whiskey Disco, and for the house subsidiary, Lovedancing. In addition to curating these two outlets and putting out his own records on them as well, in the past few years alone he has released on over a dozen labels, including Kolour LTD, Rocksteady Disco, Delusions of Grandeur, Toy-Tonics, Soul-Clap Records, Masterworks Music and more. Output has been nothing short of consistent, hitting #1 chart positions on sites such as Juno, several times.
 
Wen it comes to performances Pontchartrain believes in the overarching goal of making people dance, and think in equal parts. From the time he brought the Detroit Children’s Choir on stage with him at Movement Festival to sing along, to the bold invocations of poetry and messages of love, the dancefloor is a temple when he’s on deck. A place to worship each other and the feeling of letting loose. Whatever sounds get you there; genre is second to the emotion.
 
Like many of the great Detroit artists he looks up to, there’s a humble blue collar aspect to his background as well. Pontch still works as a social worker directly with drug addicts getting back on their feet right here in the motor city. He volunteers with groups such as Give A Beat, LRNG, Girls Rock Detroit, local public libraries, and is now a volunteer and teacher at Spin Inc music production school. Music is truly a way of life, part of the greater idea of lifting each other up. His actions, sounds, and personality encompass this idea.
