PREMIERE | Steve Cook - Notice Me | Wonder Stories (2017)

She licked her lips provocatively as she stared him up and down. In the distance there was music playing but the pair cared not for such ambience beneath the glow of the moonlight. Before them the waves rolled gracefully upon the dusty sand, the palm trees blowing delicately in the warm air. The sky was a bitter shade of black, the stars faintly visible behind the gloomy clouds. This was not some sort of peaceful paradise but a stormy romance on an island lost. 

Smagghe & Cross return following recent releases on Offen Music and our own Ransom Note Records imprint. The pair deliver an intriguing EP for Glasgow based record label Huntleys & Palmers.

PREMIERE: Smagghe & Cross - MMMMMMM [Huntleys & Palmers]

A remix appendix to Jennifer Touchs last year EP-Debut on Riotvan. A record, on which essentially everything has already been said. That´s why it is not astonishing that the assemled adaptations do not necessarily evolve the sound narrative of „Feeling C“ but rather revitalise the spirit of the originals in various clubscenarios.

Best example is Curses reinterpretation of „Sell“. An uncomplicated and straightforward floor absorption with the base of a stoic kick and monotone bass foundation. What almost triggered Valerie Dore-Memories in the original version now seems to sound more like a Anne Clark-Hommage with the reduction and the very urged vocal parts.

An even more radical approach is chosen by Chinaski for his interpretation of the title track. The coarse beat substance is almost searching for a link-up to it´s source. But the reduced tempo, the all in all decelerated arrangement and the synthbass-drone that strides through the whole track, transform „Feeling C“ in a score that probably rotates high on Darth Vaders Playlist.

Panthera Krauses approach to „Wordless“ is comparatively careful. Also the break from the 4/4-frame and the reflection onto some of the more distinctive marks of the original. Not to miss: the shift into a different, a little more translucent frequency range.

Subsequent, it´s Touch himself, contributing a revision. Her remix of „No One“ could easily be interpreted as a dub-version. Reduction of the vocal parts, purification of the whole arrangement, explicit rhythm-emphasis. Less events on the surface. But a lot more bounce.

Concluding is another version of „Wordless“, this time from Llewellyn, who lets his already on Riotvans last publication shown sympathy for washed-out Disco-Tradition get the upper hand again. Herefor he invokes of a Synth-Arpeggio as well as a every resistance breaking beat that will find it´s safe place in the more aesthetic segments of todays obvious Disco-House-boom.

While the blogs are going mad for Vilinus or for Playa Del Carmen or even Lisbon as clubbing hotspots there is a quiet revolution happening in Tirana.  The guys at Playground Records have noticed this and asked Uj Pa Gaz to remix the latest NoGain track. 
As a result Albania's finest has delivered a slow motion acid house beast which absolutely does the business bringing the melody of the original to the forefront while the groove stays in place it effortlessly keeps the dancefloor rolling while giving a slightly blissed out moment to those who need a moment to just reflect on all those little things which keep us awake at night. A toaster which has been left on, that time you drunkenly hit on your bosses wife or just a killer bassline which you can't quite get your head around!

Alexander Pletnev started an entirely new journey under his own name two years ago. Release after release on forward thinking and respected labels like Media Fury, KUMP, Fleeting Wax, SZE and Hard Fist, he has built a solid discography of incredible diversity - from percussive DJ tools to viscous synthetic EBM to dreamy weirdness.
His latest EP titled "Voranto Bros" is a long awaited return to Le Temps Perdu and the prime example of refined musical storytelling. Title track is a cinematic tale, a sound novel about two migrant brothers hitting the shores of USA in the dawn of XXth century to became vicious gangsters, broken souls ruling the night of NYC. Dusty tape hiss, off kilter percussions and melodies all alternate to later sink under the weight of heavy drums. While Hope They Wont Come Back is a severe instrumental ballad with low drums, talking bass lines and noisy guitar riffs - five minutes inside confused man's mind.
On a remix front, Cocktail D'Amore's head honchos Discodromo strip Voranto Bros down to bear bones to deliver EBM style dance floor burner. And Harold Boué aka Abstraxion aka Lion's Drums of Biologic Records fame delivers menacing remix for Hope They Won't Come Back, a dark & mystic journey, which unwinds slowly and builds up to unexpected climax.

PREMIERE : Pletnev - Voranto Bros (Discodromo Remix)

Volcan La Pété, the hedonist experimental music band from Lille, makes its official debut on Fauna Rêve with ‘Bronze’. It couldn't be in a more suited way: they are also opening the catalogue of the Mexico City based, deviant dance music newly born label.
Two fantastic original psycho-paranoid chuggy cuts are the main course, while Mexico resident Shubostar and chilean producer Ricardo Tobar elegantly take charge of remix duties respectively.

Pop District is the solo musical endeavour of Toronto, Canada’s Chris Macintyre.

Perhaps best known for his stint as 1/2 of celebrated mutant-techno outfit Jokers of the Scene and the industrial club duo Bulkhead, Macintyre has been involved in a wide array of musical collaborations over the last 15 years. The Pop District project sees him take an entirely DIY approach - producing, composing, performing, mixing and mastering his own records while also handling album design and video direction for each release.

2020’s ‘The Gold Rush’ LP is a debut album that actually wasn’t the first to be released. Recorded and sequenced between 2009 and 2012, the album was shelved after being rejected by the labels it was pitched to. His subsequent production, the ‘Secret Dream’ LP emerged in 2015 and spawned the sleeper techno hit “Red Eye”, a dreamy dancefloor cut that is still gaining momentum 5 years on. 

Finally, after 8 years in the vault, ‘The Gold Rush’ is released via Los Angeles cult cassette label Far Away Tapes, still sounding as unique and fresh as when it was first conceived. A lush mix of instrumental dream pop, electro funk and left-field electronics, it’s an album that aims to defy categorization and reveal itself for years to come.
